CIDCA spokesperson Tian Lin said that in order to help the Palestinian government and people cope with the emergency humanitarian crisis and demonstrate the international humanitarian spirit, the Chinese government had launched a humanitarian assistance response mechanism.

WhatsApp blocked accounts of Palestinian journalists covering Israel's war on Gaza

Journalists said they received messages from WhatsApp stating their accounts were blocked for breaching community standards

Dozens of Palestinian journalists have had their WhatsApp accounts blocked amid media coverage of recent armed confrontations between Israel and Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip.

Journalists from Al Jazeera and the AFP news agency, based in occupied East Jerusalem, the West Bank and besieged Gaza Strip, said they received messages from WhatsApp informing them that their accounts were blocked for breaching community standards.

Tahseen al-Astall, the vice president of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, told AFP that an estimated 100 journalists in Gaza had their WhatsApp accounts blocked.

Wael al-Dahdouh, Al Jazeera's bureau chief in the Gaza Strip, had his WhatsApp account blocked for three days before being reinstated.

Dahdouh told Al Jazeera he was surprised that his WhatsApp account was blocked on Friday, just when a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian factions was announced at 2 am local time.

His account was restored on Sunday after the Qatari-backed channel contacted WhatsApp headquarters in Silicon Valley to ask about it.

Dahdouh said that his account was restored but all messages and data which was stored on the application were deleted, including images, numbers and messages.

AFP reported that two of its journalists had their WhatsApp accounts blocked shortly after the 11 days of armed confrontations in the Gaza Strip ended.

'This has affected my work'

Facebook, which owns Instagram and WhatsApp, was accused by Palestinian officials and digital rights organisations of removing Palestinian content during the latest round of protests in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and inside Israel.

Israel bombed and flattened the al-Jalaa tower, which housed the offices of numerous media production companies and news agencies, including the Associated Press, Al-Jazeera and Middle East Eye, drawing condemnation from media and human rights organisations.

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate said Israel targeted 33 media organisations, injuring 170 journalists - 70 in the Gaza Strip and 100 in the West Bank, and killing one in Gaza.

Journalists widely use WhatsApp to receive breaking news, images, videos, and statements from the ground, and they join different WhatsApp groups, sometimes run by governments and political organisations, to receive syndicated material and official statements.

Hassan Slaieh, a freelance journalist in Gaza, told the Associated Press that he thought his WhatsApp account might have been blocked because he was a member of a group called, "Hamas Media."

"This has affected my work and my income because I lost conversations with sources and people," Slaieh told the AP.

During the 11-day Israeli campaign, Israeli air strikes killed 253 Palestinians in Gaza, including 66 children, and wounded 1,948 others.

Rockets from the Gaza Strip killed 12 people in Israel, including one soldier.

Nearly 600 Arrested In Massive Cybercrime Bust

Last week, Interpol announced the successful conclusion of a seven-month operation into a massive cyber fraud ring operating. The perpetrators allegedly hijacked over $83 million in funds from victims during a their international crime spree.

The operation, dubbed HAECHI-I, began in September of 2020 and focused on financial cybercrime in Korea. As leads were followed over the next several months, the operation expanded to involve investigators from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Korea, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Charges have been laid for a number of different crimes, ranging from online sextortion to business email compromises schemes. In one such incident a Korean company was targeted and eventually defrauded to the tune of $3.5 million.

Invoices with modified banking information were injected into a legitimate email thread with a contractor and a whopping $7 million was redirected to accounts in Indonesia and Hong Kong.

The outcome could’ve been much worse, but because the victim notified law enforcement officials immediately the other $3.5 million was recovered when accounts were frozen.

These business email scams (BECs) have become frighteningly commonplace in recent years. In 2018 the FBI estimated that 24,000 corporate victims reported for over $5 billion in losses. Some of the hardest-hit victims have been defrauded out of tens of millions of dollars.

White House says cyberattack on meat producer JBS likely from Russia

The White House said Tuesday that a cyberattack on major meat producer JBS USA this week likely originated from Russia, saying it is engaging with Moscow to hold accountable the hackers believed to be responsible for the attack.

“JBS notified the administration that the ransom demand came from a criminal organization, likely based in Russia,” White House principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Tuesday aboard Air Force One.

“The White House is engaging directly with the Russian government on this matter, and delivering the message that responsible states do not harbor ransomware criminals,” she added.

Jean-Pierre noted that JBS USA, which is the nation’s top beef producer, had notified the White House on Sunday that they had been hit by a ransomware attack, the same type of attack recently used by a Russian-based cyber criminal group that forced Colonial Pipeline to shut down systems for a week.

JBS said in a statement Monday that servers in North America and Australia had been impacted by the attack, and that some customer transactions may be delayed. The company has not publicly commented on the hackers responsible for the attack.

Jean-Pierre stressed that the engagement with the Russian government was part of a wider response from the Biden administration following the attack on JBS. The FBI is investigating the attack, with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) providing technical support.

“The White House has offered assistance to JBS, and our team and the Department of Agriculture have spoken to their leadership several times in the last day,” Jean-Pierre told reporters, adding that the Agriculture Department had reached out to warn other major meat producers.

“We’re assessing any impacts on supply, and the president has directed the administration to determine what we can do to mitigate any impacts as they may become necessary,” Jean-Pierre said.

She pointed to President Biden's focus on cybersecurity, specifically his recently signed executive order that directed a range of actions to shore up federal cybersecurity. The order was signed within a week of the attack on Colonial Pipeline, which led to shortages throughout several states for days, but the order had been planned since early in the administration following other major cyberattacks.

The Washington Free Beacon revealed that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) controlled China Daily, paid more than $1.6 million for advertising campaigns in a wide variety of U.S. outlets.

The list of outlets included Time magazine, the Los Angeles Times, Financial Times, and Foreign Policy magazine, according to disclosures to the DOJ. Approximately another $1 million was paid to American newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and Houston Chronicle, to print copies of its own publications, the Beacon noted.

The Beacon broke down the specific details of the payments that China Daily made to U.S. outlets, among other foreign outlets. Time magazine took in $700,00 for advertising, L.A. Times received $272,000, Foreign Policy magazine $291,000, and Financial Times received $371,577. The Globe and Mail, a Canadian newspaper received $329,898 for advertising. In addition, “China Daily paid $89,700 to the L.A. Times for printing services and approximately $164,000 combined to the Chicago Tribune, Houston Chronicle, and the Boston Globe.”

The fact that major media outlets in the U.S. have promoted communist China propaganda should outrage every American.

Developments suggesting the coronavirus originated from a laboratory leak in Wuhan, China make the Beacon’s reporting even more damning. The Financial Times, which has operations in the U.S., just ran a story May 26 giving credibility to the Chinese government saying, “China dismisses U.S. call for probe into Covid lab leak.” They also wrote, “China has denied that a lab leak was a possible cause and has once again suggested that the virus was just as likely to have come from U.S. biolabs.”

The Beacon pointed out specifically that Time magazine, in particular, “appears to be a new China Daily client.” It continued, “The magazine’s website features articles from China Daily with the disclosure ‘paid partner content,’ though without any mention of its affiliation with the Chinese government.”

The further development of strategic partnership with China is one of our top priorities. It is stipulated in the Foreign Policy Concept, which President of Russia Vladimir Putin approved in November 2016. We are grateful to our colleagues from the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC) and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) for organising a regular, sixth joint conference. We regard it as an opportunity to review the current state and development outlook of our bilateral cooperation and its increasing influence on global developments.

This is a special year for us: 20 years ago on July 16, 2001, President of Russia Vladimir Putin and President of China Jiang Zemin met in Moscow to sign the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation. By turning this new page in their relations, the parties demonstrated their resolve to pass their friendship down through the generations. The treaty formalised the previously applied political definition of bilateral relations as “a partnership of (…) equality and trust and strategic collaboration.” In other words, this truly historical international document has put on record the development of a new model of our interstate relations and their progress to a fundamentally new stage.

I would like to note that the Treaty is based on the universally recognised norms of international law, first of all the goals and principles of the UN Charter. It seals the parties’ agreement on mutual support in the defence of the national unity and territorial integrity, as well as their commitment not to be the first to use nuclear weapons against each other and not to target strategic nuclear missiles on each other. The document also formulated the principle of “respecting each other’s choice of the course of political, economic, social and cultural development.” The parties pledged to immediately contact and consult each other in the event of the threat of aggression and not to allow their territory to be used by third countries to the detriment of the national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the other party. In this way, Russia and China provided a legal framework for the closest possible collaboration on strategic matters bearing on their fundamental interests without creating a formal military-political alliance. In fact, a comprehensive Russian-Chinese partnership is more than just a classical military-political union.

Another vital provision mentions the absence of any territorial claims to each other and the parties’ resolve “to make the border between them into one where everlasting peace and friendship prevail from generation to generation.” The incorporation of this principle promoted the final settlement of the so-called border dispute and greatly strengthened mutual trust.

Time Magazine Takes Chinese Cash To Promote Controversial Drone Business

Iconic mag fails to properly disclose $700k from China

As part of a $700,000 advertising campaign, Time magazine published articles from a Chinese state-run media agency touting a controversial Chinese drone maker accused of helping the government surveil Uyghurs and boosting the Chinese Communist Party’s latest five-year economic plan.

Time has published 75 online articles from China Daily as part of the lucrative ad deal, which began late last year. The Time webpage discloses that the company is paid to publish the China Daily articles, though not that they are state-sponsored propaganda.

The Justice Department requires China Daily to disclose its media activities under the Foreign Agents Registration Act due to its affiliation with the People’s Republic of China. The news agency paid millions of dollars for advertising and printing over the past six months to American newspapers and magazines, including Time, the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and Foreign Policy magazine.

The partnerships provide a window into the tactics the Chinese Communist Party uses to influence international audiences, and the revelation is likely to fuel concerns about an arrangement in which American news outlets peddle Chinese propaganda. The Jamestown Foundation, a pro-democracy think tank, has questioned whether American news outlets will tone down negative coverage of China because of the advertising partnerships.

While most of the China Daily content is not political in nature, some of the articles appear to be thinly veiled attempts to portray the Chinese government and companies in a positive light.

The China Daily article about drones appeared just after the Trump administration blacklisted DJI, China’s largest drone maker, citing concerns that Chinese intelligence could use the drones to collect data on American citizens. The Chinese government has allegedly used DJI drones to surveil Uyghur Muslims, millions of whom are held in detention camps in the Xinjiang region. Under Chinese law, companies are required to comply with data requests from the government.

The article highlights uses for DJI drones other than surveillance of Uyghurs. It notes that DJI has sold 40,000 drones for agricultural work over the past year and that the company is "helping farmers improve efficiency and increase the use of intelligent agricultural equipment."

China Daily published the article on its own website on Dec. 25, a week after the Trump administration put DJI on a blacklist.

Time’s first China Daily placement was an article championing the Chinese Communist Party’s recent five-year plan. The article blamed the United States for "escalating" tensions with China by threatening to ban WeChat and TikTok, two phone apps that U.S. officials believe have ties to Chinese intelligence.

The last article published by Time is a China Daily story from April 26 in which retired diplomat Chas Freeman marvels at China’s economic progress in the 50 years since he worked as Richard Nixon’s interpreter during the president’s 1972 visit. Freeman is affiliated with the isolationist Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, a controversial think tank whose scholars have defended China from claims that it is committing genocide against Uyghurs.

At Least 55 Killed In Islamist Massacres In Congo’s Bloodiest Day

On May 31st, two attacks left at least 55 dead in villages in Eastern Congo.

The army and a local civil rights group blamed the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an Islamist armed group, for raiding the village of Tchabi and a camp for displaced people near Boga, another village. Both are close to the border of Uganda.

Houses were burned and civilians abducted, the U.N. office for humanitarian affairs said in a statement.

Albert Basegu, the head of a civil rights group in Boga, told Reuters that he had been alerted to the attack by the sound of cries at a neighbor’s house.

“When I got there I found that the attackers had already killed an Anglican pastor and his daughter was also seriously wounded,” Basegu said.

The Kivu Security Tracker (KST), which has mapped unrest in restive eastern Congo since June 2017, said on Twitter the wife of a local chief was among the dead.

As it can be seen above, it is the bloodiest day since 2017.

The ADF is believed to have killed more than 850 people in 2020, according to the United Nations, in a spate of reprisal attacks on civilians after the army began operations against it the year before.

President Felix Tshisekedi declared a state of siege in Congo’s North Kivu and Ituri provinces on May 1 in an attempt to curb increasing attacks by militant groups.

“Taking into account the gravity of the situation… the president informed the cabinet of his decision to proclaim a state of siege in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri,” said Patrick Muyaya.

He said details of what the measure would entail would be released publicly in the next few hours.

Under DRC’s constitution, the president can declare either a state of emergency or a state of siege “if severe circumstances immediately threaten the independence or integrity of the national territory, or if they interrupt the regular functioning of institutions”.

An estimated 122 armed groups of varying sizes operate in mineral-rich eastern DRC, many a legacy of regional wars in the 1990s.

Uganda announced earlier this month that it had agreed to share intelligence and coordinate operations against the rebels but that it would not be deploying troops in Congo.

The ADF militia are Ugandan Islamist fighters who have made their base in eastern DRC since 1995.

Branded a jihadist organization by Tshisekedi and the United States, the ADF has killed more than 1,200 civilians in the Beni area alone since 2017, according to a monitor called the Kivu Security Tracker (KST).

The army has conducted operations against them in the region since October 2019, but has not been able to put a stop to the massacres of civilians.

Fully Vaccinated People to Dominate Third Wave of COVID-19 Deaths in UK, Warns Report

A recent document published by the UK’s Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modeling, Operational subgroup (SPI-M-O), has triggered controversy among netizens due to its predictions about a potential third wave of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. SPI-M-O reports to the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) and advises the British government.

The authors predict that the “resurgence in both hospitalizations and deaths is dominated by those that have received two doses of the vaccine, comprising around 60% and 70% of the wave respectively. This can be attributed to the high levels of uptake in the most at-risk age groups, such that immunization failures account for more serious illness than unvaccinated individuals.”

“This shows that most deaths and admissions in a post-Roadmap resurgence are in people who have received two vaccine doses, even without vaccine protection waning or a variant emerging that escapes vaccines,” the document continues.

SPI-M-O predicts that since vaccine administration has been so high in the oldest age groups, modelled in the report at “95% in the over 50-year olds,” these groups will account for the majority of hospitalizations and deaths in a third wave. In total, an estimated 9.5% of over 50-year olds will be vaccinated but “not protected against death… This is not the result of vaccines being ineffective, merely uptake being so high.”

Widespread apprehension about vaccine adverse events

The SPI-M-O report partially blames people who choose “not to receive the vaccine” for the impending wave of infections. Critics have raised concerns that people who opt out of vaccination may be scorned as “criminals,” which would violate fundamental individual rights of freedom of choice and informed consent.

Many individuals, ranging from soldiers to quarantine staff and everyday people, do not trust the COVID-19 vaccines because, in comparison to the development of previous vaccines, they were created in a more abbreviated period with less rigorous testing and fewer animal trials.

According to the Wellcome Trust foundation, it can take up to 10 years for a vaccine to be fully developed through proper research and testing. However, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was only in development for six months before it was authorized for emergency use in the UK.

Given the short development timeline, the fact that the COVID-19 vaccines are still not officially approved by government organizations, and the unclear short and long-term side effects, apprehension is to be expected. Public reports of adverse events, such as about blood clots and associated deaths, led Danish authorities to ban the AstraZeneca vaccines.

Supreme Court Rules Asylum Applicants Bear Burden of Proof, Reversing Ninth Circuit

Unanimously ruling against a Chinese asylum claimant, the Supreme Court reversed the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals this morning, finding immigration judges do not have to explicitly state that an asylum seeker’s story is not credible when finding against him.

The court’s opinion in the case, Garland v. Dai, court file 19-1155, was written by Justice Neil Gorsuch.

“The Ninth Circuit has long applied a special rule in immigration disputes,” Gorsuch wrote.

“The rule provides that, in the absence of an explicit adverse credibility determination by an immigration judge or the Board of Immigration Appeals, a reviewing court must treat a petitioning alien’s testimony as credible and true.”

In the case, Chinese national Ming Dai claimed he was beaten and arrested in 2009 for trying to prevent Chinese authorities from aborting his second child under that country’s now-rescinded one-child policy. He testified that, when he tried to stop his wife’s abduction, police broke his ribs, dislocated his shoulder, and jailed him for 10 days. Dai said he lost his job, his wife was demoted, and his daughter was denied admission to good schools.

Dai came to the U.S. on a tourist visa and sought asylum shortly after arriving.

Quoting federal law, Gorsuch wrote that the burden rested on Dai to prove that he was a “refugee,” that is, someone “unable or unwilling” to return to China “because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution . . . for failure or refusal to undergo [involuntary sterilization] or for other resistance to a coercive population control program.”

But Dai failed to disclose the fact that his wife and daughter had already traveled to the United States and voluntarily returned to China, undercutting the claim of a fear of persecution at home.

Dai “hesitated at some length” when confronted with these facts, according to the immigration judge, and then admitted his daughter returned to China to go to school, his wife returned to her job and her elderly father, and that Dai did not have a job in China to which he could return.

Moderated by Saleem Ali – a Professor at the Biden School of Public Policy – the panel featured several speakers with ties to the Chinese Communist Party and COVID-19.

Among the controversial picks for the “Congressional briefing on Science Diplomacy” were Chancellor of New York University (NYU) Shanghai Tong Shijun, President of EcoHealth Alliance Peter Daszak, and Senior Vice President of the US-China Business Council (USCBC) Jake Parker.

Alondra Nelson, Biden’s Deputy Director for Science and Society in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, also attended the first 20 minutes of the meeting.

Daszak, who heads an organization that received millions from Dr. Anthony Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for joint research with the Wuhan Institute of Virology, addressed the virtual conference and called for closer research ties between the U.S. and China.

“We need to partner with the countries where emerging diseases tend to originate, whether they’re our allies or our competitors, and it’s to the benefit of everybody’s health and our own national security to do that,” he posits. Daszak also used the platform to push the speculative narrative that COVID-19 has natural origins, suggesting society “drives people into close contact with animals that carry viruses like the SARS Coronaviruses that led to COVID-19.”

The panel also featured a member of the Chinese Communist Party.

NYU’s Tong has worked at several Chinese Communist Party-controlled institutions including the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS) and East China Normal University (ECNU) where he served as Deputy Party Secretary and Secretary of the Communist Party Standing Committee, respectively. SASS has been flagged by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for its close ties to the Chinese Communist Party’s top spy agency, the Ministry of State Security. Labeled a “front group for Chinese intelligence collection and overseas spy recruitment” by the FBI, the think tank was involved in a 2019 criminal case involving a retired Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operative selling classified U.S. defense documents to China.

And the U.S. China Business Council, represented by speaker Jake Parker, is a Washington D.C. and China-based group that lobbies on behalf of “over 200 American companies that do business with China.” “USCBC is uniquely positioned to serve its members’ interests in the United States and China,” the group divulges in its mission statement.

TEXAS: Abbott, Patrick, Phelan Received $1.7 Million from PAC Linked to Transgender Clinic for Central American Immigrants

The Director of Border Health PAC owns a "significant stake" of a hospital with a transgender clinic that treats illegal migrants

Top Texas politicians including Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and House Speaker Dade Phelan, have received over $1.7 million from a PAC linked to a clinic that specialises in “treating” transgender illegal immigrants. This is the second PAC linked to a transgender clinic that has donated to them.

In 2017, the Gender Care Clinic opened at the Family Medicine Center, run by the Doctors Hospital of Renaissance and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg. The clinic offers “hormone replacement consultation” among other transgender treatments. Dr Michelle Cordoba, an endocrinologist at the clinic, said that many transgender immigrants were treated at the clinic. “I see trans-immigrants, people who are literally fleeing for their lives,” she said. “Transgender women in El Salvador don’t have a very good chance of surviving.”

According to reports, McAllen businessman Alonzo Cantu owns a “significant stake” in the hospital in Edinburg. Cantu also chairs and “tacitly controls” Border Health PAC, which is the “primary conduit for campaign contributions from his medical colleagues that are disbursed to politicians at the local, state, and federal levels.” In a profile piece from Texas Monthly from 2018, Carlos Sanchez noted that while Cantu mostly supports, Democrats, “he isn’t shy about giving to Republicans who vote the way he wants.”

Initially reported by Tracy Shannon of MadMommaBear, a number of top Texas Republicans have received hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Border Health PAC, which of course links back to the transgender clinic. Since 2015, Governor Greg Abbott received $800,000 from the PAC, while his second-in-command, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, took $825,000 from them in the same time frame. House Speaker Dade Phelan also received $105,000, while Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton received a cool $200,000 from them.

Tony Martinez, the mayor of Brownsville, described Cantu as “the most powerful person in South Texas.” Sanchez said that if money is a form of power, “there are few who play the game as well as… Cantu.” He noted that Patrick visited Cantu in 2017, shortly after the Senate had just “shortchanged” its funding for the medical school where the transgender clinic was located. “After Patrick met with Cantu, most of that funding was restored,” Sanchez wrote. “That’s power.”

LIVE: Active Shooter at LA County Fire Station

LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. – An active shooter was reported at an Agua Dulce fire station Tuesday.

One person was killed and another was wounded at Fire Station 81 in the 8700 block of Sierra Highway.

“It is with heavy hearts that the LACoFD confirms that a tragic shooting occurred at approximately 10:55 a.m. today at FS 81 in Agua Dulce,” the Los Angeles County Fire Department wrote on Twitter.

The suspect is believed to be a disgruntled employee who later set fire to his own home, KABC reported.

Shortly after the gunfire, police responded to the house fire in the 2600 block of Bent Spur Drive.

Local news helicopter pilots reported a lifeless body in or near an empty pool at the residence. It was unclear if this was the shooter.

Initial scanner reports indicated the suspect was a white male driving a Toyota Tundra.
