Many meanings beyond just a simple name

We’ve all seen the symbol “IHS” in church, in religious art and on vestments.

We also know it has something to do with Christ, but everyone seems to have a different explanation.

The one most commonly agreed upon — and with the longest history — is that IHS (??? in Greek) are the first three letters (or the first, second and last letters, as some prefer) of Jesus’ name. In the Greek alphabet, that full name is ????? (Iota Eta Sigma Upsilon Sigma) which is “JESUS” in our alphabet. The Greek letter “sigma,” — ? —looks similar to our “S,” so the first three letters of Jesus’ name in Greek became our IHS.

This monogram was not in use early in church history. According to The Catholic Encyclopedia, the IHS monogram can only be traced as far back as a Roman coin from the eighth century, which bore the inscription: “The Lord Jesus Christ, King of Kings.”

This IHS is the monogram that St. Bernard wrote about in the 12th century, that St. Bernadine and St. Vincent Ferrer carried about for devotional purposes in the 15th century, and which the Jesuits (the Society of Jesus, founded in 1534) adopted as their emblem. The Jesuits also added a cross on top of the monogram and three nails below.

Fauci attended Regis High School in Manhattan's Upper East Side, where he captained the school's basketball team despite standing only 5 ft 7 in (1.70 m) tall.[9][10][5]

According to a paper by Canadian academics Serge Larivée, Geneviève Chénard and Carole Sénéchal, Teresa's clinics received millions of dollars in donations but lacked medical care, systematic diagnosis, necessary nutrition and sufficient analgesics for those in pain;[118] in the opinion of the three academics, "Mother Teresa believed the sick must suffer like Christ on the cross".[119] It was said that the additional money might have transformed the health of the city's poor by creating advanced palliative care facilities.[120][121]

One of Teresa's most outspoken critics was English journalist, literary critic and antitheist Christopher Hitchens, host of the documentary Hell's Angel (1994) and author of the essay The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice (1995) who wrote in a 2003 article: "This returns us to the medieval corruption of the church, which sold indulgences to the rich while preaching hellfire and continence to the poor. [Mother Teresa] was not a friend of the poor. She was a friend of poverty. She said that suffering was a gift from God. She spent her life opposing the only known cure for poverty, which is the empowerment of women and the emancipation of them from a livestock version of compulsory reproduction."[122] He accused her of hypocrisy for choosing advanced treatment for her heart condition.[123][124] Hitchens said that "her intention was not to help people", and that she lied to donors about how their contributions were used. "It was by talking to her that I discovered, and she assured me, that she wasn't working to alleviate poverty", he said, "She was working to expand the number of Catholics. She said, 'I'm not a social worker. I don't do it for this reason. I do it for Christ. I do it for the church.'"[125] Although Hitchens thought he was the only witness called by the Vatican, Aroup Chatterjee (author of Mother Teresa: The Untold Story) was also called to present evidence opposing Teresa's beatification and canonisation;[126] the Vatican had abolished the traditional "devil's advocate", which served a similar purpose.[126]

Arizona GOP election audit draws Republican politicians

Three Pennsylvania lawmakers will be in Arizona Wednesday to check out the state Senate GOP’s partisan audit of the 2020 election.

They’re the latest Republicans to make a pilgrimage to Phoenix, Ground Zero in the “stop the steal” movement's push to find support for the far-fetched conspiracy theories suggesting the election was stolen from former President Donald Trump.

U.S. Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz cheered the audit at a rally just outside Phoenix last month. The next day, several prominent Trump supporters and conspiracy promoters were advertised as speakers at a Phoenix megachurch. Enrique Tarrio, leader of the Proud Boys extremist group, recently posted a short video of himself at the Arizona Capitol.

Political pilgrimages are nothing new to Arizona, where Republican politicians have long enjoyed photo ops in front of the U.S.-Mexico border wall. But now, the draw is the Arizona State Fairgrounds, site of a former basketball arena where a Trump supporter who has promoted election conspiracies is overseeing a hand recount of 2.1 million ballots from Maricopa County.

The latest visitors are Pennsylvania Sens. Doug Mastriano and Cris Dush, and Rep. Rob Kauffman. They'll meet with Arizona legislators at the Capitol before touring the site and getting a briefing from the auditors, according to a terse statement from the audit team Tuesday. None responded to interview requests on Tuesday.

As Trump and his allies claimed without evidence last year that his Arizona loss was marred by fraud, the Arizona Senate GOP used its subpoena power to get access to all ballots, counting machines and hard drives full of election data in Maricopa County, home to Phoenix and 60% of Arizona's voters. They handed all of it over to a team led by Cyber Ninjas, a small consulting firm with no prior election experience for a hand recount and analysis of vote-counting machines and data.

The effort will not change President Joe Biden's victory, and election experts have pointed to major flaws in the process. But it's become a model for Republicans in other states hoping to turn up evidence supporting conspiracy theories.

“It’s my belief that Arizona will be the launch pad for elections audits and election integrity efforts all over this great country,” Gaetz said. He listed the swing states where Trump lost in 2020.

Greene said the audit was the reason she and Gaetz chose Mesa, a Phoenix suburb, for the second stop on their tour of America First rallies.

“Matt said, ‘You been following that Arizona audit?’” Greene said. “I said, ‘Yeah I’ve been following it.’ He said, ‘Lets go to Arizona.’ I said, ‘Count me in.’”

Mastriano has become a one-man force in conservative politics in Pennsylvania, leading anti-mask protests last year, pushing to overturn Trump’s reelection loss and showing up outside the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot.

In November, Mastriano organized a hearing in Gettysburg that featured Rudy Giuliani and a phone call appearance by Trump in which the president claimed the election was rigged and urged state lawmakers to overturn the result.

All three visiting Pennsylvania lawmakers were among the 64 Republican legislators who signed a letter asking the state's congressional delegation to object to Pennsylvania's electoral college votes being cast for Biden.

Adm. Mike Rogers, the former director of the National Security Agency and the former head of U.S. Cyber Command, has joined the board of advisers of the cybersecurity think tank Team8.

Rogers served as both NSA director and U.S. Cyber Command commander between 2014 and 2018.

As a senior adviser, Rogers will capitalize on his unique grasp of technology trends, the cyber threat landscape and the evolving tactics and tools used by cyber attackers to provide invaluable insight to both Team8’s existing portfolio companies and those currently in development, the company said.

The company opened its New York headquarters in September 2017. The company said Rogers will be instrumental in the company’s U.S. expansion.
