Went on a foray into USAspending.gov using "spike protein" as a search term. Intrasting.
Grants were let as far back as 2015 by Fauci's NIAID to Duke University for "spike protein CLEAVAGE-ACTIVATION AND EMERGENCE OF CORONAVIRUSES"
Then, in May of 2019, in the middle of a different grant which was let to study AIDs via women and child health,
spike proteins show up again as IMMUNOGENICITY AND EFFICACY OF SARS-COV-2 STABILIZED PREFUSION spike protein VACCINE (Weill Medical College of Cornell).
The May date is of particular interest since the first CV patient was supposedly identified in November of 2019. So the vaccine and spike proteins were being studied six or seven months prior to the first patient being identified.
Weill Medical College could probably use it's own dig. Total cash and prizes from the USG (including Dept. of Defense) = $2 Billion Dollars for all FYs.

The second email ties in to the Duke AIDS research grant - if the email is real, it makes sense that vaccine study was folded into an ongoing AIDS grant in May of 2019 prior to the first patient being identified.
