After more than a year of high-stakes negotiations with billions of dollars on the line, a bankruptcy plan for Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, cleared a major hurdle late Wednesday.
Federal Judge Robert Drainin White Plains, N.Y., moved the controversial deal forward despite objections from dozens of state attorneys general, setting the stage for a final vote by the company's creditors expected this summer.
The drugmaker filed for Chapter 11 protection in 2019 facing an avalanche of lawsuits tied to its aggressive opioid sales practices.
Public health experts and many government officials say the introduction of OxyContin fueled the nation's deadly opioid epidemic.
This development brings members of the Sackler family, some of whom own Purdue Pharma and served on the company's board of directors, a step closer to winning immunity from future opioid lawsuits.
According to legal documents filed as part of the case, that immunity would extend to dozens of family members, more than 160 financial trusts, and at least 170 companies, consultants and other entities associated with the Sacklers.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has emerged for many as the voice of reason and integrity as the nation confronts the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Much of that he learned at Regis High School, a no-tuition, Jesuit-run boys college-prep school in New York City that is renowned as an academic haven. Fauci, a member of the class of 1958, told a group of alumni last May that attending the school โwas the best educational period I could ever have imagined having.โ
Fauci also is a graduate of College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, another Jesuit institution, and Weill Cornell Medicine, then called Cornell University Medical College.
The alumni address was part of a return to Regis by Fauci, now 79 and known for his power walking, who, while not a household name at the time, was apparently nearing the end of a long career in government service working for six presidents.
โI take great comfort in knowing that when he speaks that he is speaking the truth and nothing but the truth,โ Jesuit Father Daniel Lahart, Regisโ president, told National Catholic Reporter. Father Lahart now supervises a school, like most across the country, confined to online classes as COVID-19 disrupts normal life.
The priest said the most famous Regis alumnus has exuded integrity throughout a career, which, before this latest outbreak, was best known for raising the alarm about HIV/AIDS at the highest levels of government in the 1980s.
Fauci has emerged as a no-nonsense truth-teller in the latest crisis. While President Donald Trump has been prone to what have been criticized as overly optimistic daily briefings, itโs been Fauci, frequently standing behind the president, who has tempered the optimism, whether it has been about the possibility of miracle cures or the hope of returning to business as usual.
In an interview with Science Magazine in late March, Fauci acknowledged that Trumpโs stretching of the truth during national news conferences creates an issue. But his response has been limited. โI canโt jump in front of the microphone and put him down,โ Fauci told Science, a quote widely seen as an illustration of the tension between science and political talk.
โHeโs got a relatively good poker face. But not all of the time,โ Father Lahart said about Fauci.
During Fauciโs visit to Regis last year โ he also visited a biology class at the school before talking to alumni โ he waxed nostalgically about his four years at Regis. Regis students come from all over the metropolitan region, picked out as eighth graders from the smartest boys from far-flung parochial schools.
The students often tell tales of heroic commutes. For Fauci it consisted of a couple of bus rides as well as two express subway trains, for a 70-minute, one-way ride to school from his home in Bensonhurst in the New York borough of Brooklyn.
He was captain of the basketball team, and if there were games and practices in Harlem, in the borough of Manhattan, or in the Bronx, another New York borough, the ride home could take nearly two hours. Regis students also were expected to do three hours of homework a night, a discipline he takes to public service.
On the first day of his freshman year, he recalled, the Jesuit dean of discipline, Father Flanagan, changed his name from Anthony to Tony, and it stuck.

The Jesuit priest at the helm of prestigious Regis High School in Manhattan is being ousted over claims of sexual misconduct, The Post has learned.
The school โ which counts Dr. Anthony Fauci among its notable alumni โ said it intends to remove the Rev. Daniel Lahart for cause, according to a letter sent to the community Sunday.
โThe Board of Trustees has determined, based on the findings of the third party investigator, Fr. Lahart engaged in inappropriate and unwelcome verbal communications and physical conduct, all of a sexual nature, with adult members of the Regis community, including subordinates,โ states the letter, obtained by The Post.
โThis conduct was non-consensual, and moreover, continued notwithstanding express requests from the affected parties for the conduct to cease.โ
The private all-boys school on the Upper East Side said it first learned of the allegations in late February and placed Lahart, 59, on administrative leave pending an investigation.
Based on the findings of the outside investigator, the Board of Trustees determined that Lahart had acted inappropriately, said the letter, sent by Chair Anthony DiNovi.
Lahart โ who was named president in 2016 โ was invited to participate in the probe but declined to do so, DiNovi wrote.
The priest was told last week that the board, after getting the nod from the USA East Province of the Society of Jesus, intended to remove him from his position effective April 21.
