When are we going to quit calling them "Journalists"

Berlin police said 13 journalists were detained Saturday while reporting on a protest by environmentalist against the construction of a highway in the German capital.

The journalists were covering an early-morning blockade of the construction site of the A100 Autobahn by activists from the group Sand im Getriebe, or Sand in the Gears.

“They entered the site along with the activists, so we treated them as participants in the protest," police spokesperson Martin Halweg said.

They are now being investigated on suspicion of trespassing on the construction site, which is operated by the publicly owned company Autobahn GmbH, Halweg said

“We don’t have any issues with the U.S.,” he continued. “But it has an issue with us. It wants to contain our development and publicly talks about it. Economic restrictions and attempts to influence our country’s domestic politics, relying on forces they consider their allies inside Russia, stem from that.”

Putin appeared hopeful that the meeting in Geneva could ease tensions between the two countries. Since 2014 after Russia's annexation of Crimea and accusations of Russian interference in U.S. elections, relations between the two countries appear to be at a Cold War low.

Putin then went on to criticize the United States's handling of Jan. 6. “They weren’t just a crowd of robbers and rioters. Those people had come with political demands,” Putin said.

Infiltration not Invasion

At around 6pm, the Volans, a cargo vessel owned and operated by the ZIM shipping corporation, pulled out of port with its cargo intact.

It was apparently bound for Los Angeles, according to an online schedule.

Protesters had prevented the ship from docking at Oakland for more than two weeks after its scheduled arrival date.

The vessel ostensibly attempted to avoid the picket line.

“By refusing to unload Israeli cargo, Oakland workers are throwing a wrench in the Israeli economy and putting pressure on Israeli apartheid,” tweeted Jewish Voice for Peace.

“Each day the ZIM ship can’t unload, the largest Israeli shipping company loses millions of [dollars],” the group added.

China feeling the heat

https://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy/article/3136187/china-calls-russia-hold-line-again-us-perverse-acts

Beijing has called on Moscow to make a united stand against “perverse” actions by Washington as leaders of Russia and the US prepare for a meeting later this month.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi issued the call during a phone conversation with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Friday, according to the Chinese foreign ministry.

“The US has formed small groups under the guise of democracy, used human rights as an excuse to interfere in countries’ domestic politics, and exercised unilateralism under the banner of multilateralism,” Wang was quoted as saying in a statement on Saturday

“China and Russia, as responsible big powers and permanent members of the United Nations’ Security Council, should jointly expose and stand against these perverse acts. [We should] strongly defend the United Nations-centric and law-based international order and system, preserve fairness and justice and defend multilateralism.”

“Going forward, consistent with the President’s direction, this Department of Justice — in a change to its longstanding practice — will not seek compulsory legal process in leak investigations to obtain source information from members of the news media doing their jobs,” department spokesman Anthony Coley said in a statement.

A bipartisan group of three U.S. senators will travel to Taiwan next week to meet with senior government officials and discuss U.S.-Taiwan relations and other issues, the de-facto U.S. Embassy in Taiwan announced Saturday.

Sunday's trip is likely to anger China, which claims Taiwan as its territory and objects to Taiwan being called a country. Like most nations, the U.S. has no formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois and Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska, members of the Armed Services Committee, and Democratic Sen. Christopher Coons of Delaware, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, will visit Taiwan as part of a larger trip to the Indo-Pacific region, the American Institute in Taiwan said in a statement Saturday.

Influence of nanoparticles on blood-brain barrier permeability and brain edema formation in rats

Nanoparticles are small sized (1-100 nm) particles derived from transition metals, silver, copper, aluminum, silicon, carbon and metal oxides that can easily cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and/or produce damage to the barrier integrity by altering endothelial cell membrane permeability. However, the influence of nanoparticles on BBB integrity is still not well-known. In this investigation, effect of nanoparticles derived from Ag, Al and Cu (50-60 nm) on BBB permeability in relation to brain edema formation was examined in a rat model. Intravenous (30 mg/kg), intraperitoneal (50 mg/kg) or intracerebral (20 microg in 10 microL) administration of Ag, Cu or Al nanoparticles disrupted the BBB function to Evans blue albumin (EBA) and radioiodine in rats 24 h after administration and induced brain edema formation. The leakage of Evans blue dye was observed largely in the ventral surface of brain and in the proximal frontal cortex. The dorsal surfaces of cerebellum showed mild to moderate EBA staining. These effects were most pronounced in animals that received Ag or Cu nanoparticles compared to Al nanoparticles through intravenous routes. These observations are the first to suggest that nanoparticles can induce brain edema formation by influencing BBB breakdown in vivo.

The substance has now covered the shores of the Sea of Marmara, which separates the Asian and European areas of the nation's capital of Istanbul.

"You know what it does to shellfish? When they open up, it prevents them from closing up again because it gets in the way. All the sea snails here are dead."

Professor Barış Salihoğlu, head of METU's Institute of Maritime Sciences, said the sludge is engulfing the entire water from the surface to the bottom.

Cevahir Efe Akcelik, an environment engineer and secretary general of the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects, added to AFP: "Studies show the mucilage is not only on the surface now but also goes 25 to 30 metres (80-100ft) deep."
