Lieber's arrest was in January of 2020. Was indicting on lying to DOJ and tax fraud over the next 6+ months.

Then a few months ago, March of 2021, "scholars," Nobel Prize winners, and other academics and scientists signed an open letter in support of Lieber and against Harvard for not defending him. In essence, they say (perhaps oversimplified): "Hey, this is common practice. We used to get a slap on the wrist. Now the criminal law is suddenly being enforced. It's not fair." WA WA WA.

"According to federal investigators, a professor at a Chinese university approached Lieber in 2011, leading Lieber to travel to China’s Wuhan University of Technology, where he signed an agreement paying him $50,000 a month and $158,000 in living expenses. He also allegedly received $1.5 million to set up a research lab at the Chinese university.

Lieber allegedly failed to disclose the information to both Harvard and the federal government and also allegedly failed to comply with Internal Revenue Service regulations on overseas payments.

In the past, scholars would face disciplinary action from their university or additional training if they made reporting errors, the letter in support of Lieber states."

They claim a "McCarthyism," blame it on Trump, and a bemoan a "brain drain" as a "promising" young scientist returned to China rather than accepting a top spot in a US scientific research university.
