A Lake Wales City Commissioner was arrested by the Polk County Sheriff's Office Thursday.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Kristen Fitzgerald used a gun to threaten an 11-year-old boy whom she'd picked up without the parent's permission. Fitzgerald is not a caregiver nor is she related to the boy, according to arrest records.

Fitzgerald denied ever pointing the gun at the child, according to the arrest affidavit.

She is charged on one count interference with child custody and one count aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to the news release. She’s currently being held at the Polk County Jail without bond.

Fitzgerald was elected to the Lake Wales City Commission in April.

In a statement sent to WOFL TV in Orlando, Polk Sheriff Grady Judd said, "We don't expect this kind of behavior from anyone, but especially someone in public office….She should be held to a higher standard and should be setting the proper example - instead, she displayed what not to do as a human being. Her conduct, threatening a child with a gun, is horrendous."

During a press conference on Friday, Judd said, "This city commissioner was way out of line….She needs to wake up."
