Rochefort was a Japanese linguist and cryptanalyst. His team was assigned to break the Japanese Navy’s Flag Officer’s Code. Rochefort and his staff would spend 12 hours or more working to decode Japanese traffic. He was known to wear slippers and a bathrobe with his khakis and go days without bathing. Rochefort took Jasper Holmes’s idea to send a fake message water supply failure on Midway. Nimitz approved the message and the Japanese took the bait and “AF” was confirmed to be Midway.
