Evanston to pay $90,000 to settle lawsuits after police chief’s Snapchat post of old booking photos

The class action lawsuit was filed May 6, 2020, against the city of Evanston and Police Chief Demitrous Cook. The five plaintiffs alleged Cook violated their constitutional rights. The suit also alleged that Cook caused damages due to willful and wonton conduct, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and asked city officials to indemnify Cook “for any award of compensatory damages, attorneys’ fees, and costs awarded against these defendants,” according to the suit.
“While Chief Cook’s acceptance of responsibility over the improper sharing of information over Snapchat is commendable, this is a situation that should never have happened,” Barrett wrote in an email. “Compounding the issue was the chief attempting to disparage the civilians by claiming they were part of an investigation while simultaneously trying to apologize for his actions during a press conference. I hope that Chief Cook learns from his error and that the Evanston Police Department puts into effect stricter policies surrounding the dissemination of private information.”
