Could This Sex Hormone Determine How Sick You Get With COVID?
A recent study shows a man’s testosterone levels may be indicative of how sick he will become if he becomes infected with COVID-19. Patients with lower levels are more likely to have a severe case of COVID-19, according to researchers.
The study compared 24 men who had mild cases of COVID-19 against 66 men who were severely ill with COVID, and data show the severely ill men had significantly lower testosterone levels at the time of diagnosis. Researchers found that when the men were admitted to the hospital, testosterone concentrations were 65% lower among men with severe illness compared with those with mild COVID-19 cases.
"The groups of men who were getting sicker were known to have lower testosterone across the board," said Dr. Sandeep Dhindsa of St. Louis University School of Medicine in Missouri. The research team says they plan to do further research into a possible association between sex hormones and cardiovascular outcomes in long-hauler COVID-19.
