Let's just say... Plum Island on Google Maps today is not what it was 10+ years ago.

Buildings and ventilation systems were not as environmentally 'tight'. It is also a migratory bird stopover. Just several miles north across Long Island sound is a marsh area at Old Saybrook / Lyme, CT - basically a very rich delta surrounded by a large population - Incidents of Lyme disease spread through New England from here.

If you grew up here you are an expert on ticks and lyme.

The SOP for working on the island (contractors) is… take the ferry, take a shower, go to work. When done - reverse. Shower, back on the ferry…

No contractor shall have 'hooved' farm animals - pigs, horse, cows, goats, etc. They do check your history. They don't like you visiting relatives that have/own them.

Sometimes contractors may have to give blood samples for testing. And… sometimes they 'lose' those tests, at least twice.

And, while they probably do a lot of this in labs on the mainland anyhow, they want to reloacte the operations on Plum Island to the mainland… This is a great idea.

Of course Plum Island has a statement of what they do NOT do:

What PIADC Does Not Do:

  • Does not perform research on human or prion diseases. The primary diseases that PIADC conducts research on are not transmissible to humans. We do, however, encounter and work with some zoonotics across the diagnostic and training missions. Our staff is trained and certified in stringent biosecurity measures to handle these samples to assure a safe laboratory work environment.

  • Does not perform research on avian influenza.

  • Does not and has not performed research on Lyme disease. Discover more information on the history of Lyme disease.

  • Does not perform research on West Nile virus; however, the facility was asked to assist when an outbreak of West Nile virus affected horses on Long Island. PIADC researchers assisted in the collection of samples, as well as an initial development and testing of a West Nile virus vaccine for horses. Discover more about the history of West Nile through USDA and more about West Nile through the Centers for Disease Control.

  • PIADC researchers do not perform classified research. DHS and USDA scientists submit research for peer-reviewed publication in national and international scientific journals, as well as present their research at scientific conferences.

Did Lyme disease come from Plum Island? I dunno. Does it matter? Probably not. There seems to be such a narrative springing up around 'It wasn't us!' - fine. It wasn't you.
