Yeah back at BTC-e (kek!) I had some Russian money, a very tiny amount which I lost along with all my records when the FBI took the site over.
I had that RUS after demonstrating to a friend that you actually CANNOT increase the value by immediately trading to one currency and then back – was a more "visual" demonstration than just "look at the bid/ask, you pay the high price when buying, and receive the low price when selling"…
Rather amusing, was like 0.0005 RUS or something left over after the transaction. :)
But anyway, I had done BTC->RUS->BTC, to answer your question. Exchanges generally have "pairs", one for the "shitcoin" and BTC; and as of a few years ago, generally also one for shitcoin and USD.
Now there are ETH pairs as well, and others. Not using exchanges for a year or so though, so a little out of the loop but if you wanted to e.g. go from TRX to EOS, the exchange might not have a direct pair between them so you might need to go TRX to BTC, and then BTC to EOS. And lose a little, with each conversion.
Similar to the old English->Russian->English translator; they fed in "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak" and got back, "The vodka's good but the meat is rotten." :)
