Water Emergency Alert is Issued as Brazil is Facing Drought

It’s official: Brazil is facing drought.

Earlier this month, the government issued a hydric emergency alert (AEH) for five of the twenty-seven federative units. It’s the first in over a century – more precisely, 111 years – which tells something about the seriousness of the situation.

The AEH will last from June through September when the rain season supposedly begins. It doesn’t sound like a big deal for a tropical country the size of a country with traditionally voluminous hydric resources.

However, the level of threat is now deemed “critical” by some agencies and institutes. Only a week ago, it was severe. Also, these states are some of the most industrialized in the country. A significant part of food production happens in these states.

Sometimes it feels like SHTF from all sides

Brazil’s drought and its impacts have a few differences to the one going on in the U.S. right now, although consequences could be related and even interconnect at some point in the near future.

Starting with energy: the Brazilian power matrix is over 60% based on hydro generation, as I mentioned in a previous article about shifts in the global energy model. In other words, two-thirds of our electricity is water-dependent (that is, rain).

Empty reservoirs mean no electricity. An increase in thermal-generated power (i.e., coal, oil, gas) has entered the system to try and make up for the decline. Still, authorities and Grid administrators must feel the need to consider some form of rationing.

As expected, they announced a rise in electricity prices. The drought will predictably cascade into production, transportation, and services, contributing to the (already) swelling inflation and most likely knocking the GDP down a few points.

How long will the Brazil drought last?

Trying to forecast the climate is impossible, especially over such a long period. But as always, history comes to the rescue. Looking back helps put things in context and gives other perspectives on the present situation. I researched going back forty years in climate statistics to have an idea at least if the present drought is an anomaly or a trend. The outlook is not too encouraging for the regions currently under the AEH – or Brazil as a whole.

During that period (1981-2021), there were 15 years of above-average (A.A.) and 25 below-average (B.A.) precipitation (the average considered officially is between the years of 1981 and 2010). That alone doesn’t tell much, but looking at the distribution of these AA/BA years along the period considered, only four years of all fifteen above-average (A.A.) rainfall happened in the last 20 years.

DC Mayor Is Unwilling To Answer Congressional Letter on Prison Conditions for Jan. 6 Protesters Held Illegally by their Country

The U.S. House Oversight is threatening to investigate the condition of prisons in D.C. where prisoners, including those held since January 6 for Capitol Hill offenses, are being held in solitary confinement, claiming Bowser is not ready for DC Statehood until she complies with their requests.

U.S. Rep. James Comer (R-KY), the Republican leader of the U.S. House Oversight Committee, sent Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser a letter in April, requesting information about Bowser’s established draconian conditions in D.C. jails keeping prisoners under her jurisdiction in solitary confinement for up to 23 hours a day. Further, Bowser’s refusal to answer to the U.S. House impacts her pursuit of Statehood for D.C. According to one local activist who has studied the situation, she has even made the situation worse because of the investigation.

Suzanne Monk, the founder of ReOpen America Pac, told The Gateway Pundit:

Remember this is anyone in D.C. who is awaiting trial, which includes people who are there as a result of January 6, who are still awaiting trial and are being held in solitary confinement for up to 23 hours a day. After Rep. Comer sent his letter, Bowser made the situation worse by claiming that anyone who had gotten vaccinated could have a break in solitary. So that makes it worse for those people in there. We are watching this situation and will update you.

According to the letter from Comer, Bowser can expect to be investigated by Congress for her actions, even if she chooses to continue to ignore their inquiries.

According to Comer’s letter, if Bowser wants statehood, she needs to be ready to take federal prisons, and that means she needs to have her prisons evaluated. Referencing a recent article in the Washington Post, he said:

D.C.’s house is not in order, and the solution is not to grant it even more authority through

statehood. It is this Committee’s responsibility and obligation to exercise proper oversight of the District, its infrastructure, finances, and citizens, including those who may be incarcerated.

Please coordinate with the staff of the Committee on Oversight and Reform to arrange a briefing

to answer questions regarding this disturbing treatment of D.C.’s incarcerated population.

In addition, please provide a response to my letter of April 6, 2021, which asked you a series of

straightforward questions regarding D.C. statehood and the intent to levy a commuter tax against neighboring jurisdictions, which has gone unanswered by your office.

The Committee on Oversight and Reform is the principal oversight committee of the U.S. House

of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this inquiry.

The U.S. House Minority Office confirmed to The Gateway Pundit that there had been no response to Comer’s letter.

One Bank Goes Apocalyptic: Inflation Is About To Explode "Leaving Global Economies Sitting On A Time Bomb"

As excerpted from "Inflation: The defining macro story of this decade" a must-read report written by Deutsche Bank's global head of research, David Folkerts-Landau, co-authored by Peter Hooper and Jim Reid.

Ronald Reagan (1978): “Inflation is as violent as a mugger, as frightening as an armed robber and as deadly as a hit man.”

Joe Biden (2021): “A job is about a lot more than a paycheck. It’s about dignity. It’s about respect. It’s about being able to look your kid in the eye and say everything will be okay. Too many people today can’t do that – and it’s got to change.”

Janet Yellen (2021): “Neither the president-elect, nor I, propose this relief package without an appreciation for the country’s debt burden. But right now, with interest rates at historic lows, the smartest thing we can do is act big”.

Jerome Powell (2021): “During this time of reopening, we are likely to see some upward pressure on prices … But those pressures are likely to be temporary as they are associated with the reopening process.”

Larry Summers, (2021): “I think this is the least responsible macroeconomic policies we’ve had in the last 40 years.”

The above quotes highlight that US macro policy and, indeed, the very role of government in the economy, is undergoing its biggest shift in direction in 40 years. In turn we are concerned that it will bring about uncomfortable levels of inflation.

It is no exaggeration to say that we are departing from neoliberalism and that the days of the new-liberal policies that begun in the Reagan era are clearly fading in the rear view mirror. The effects of this shift are being compounded by political turmoil in the US and deeply worrying geopolitical risks.

As we step into the new world, we are no longer sure how much of what we thought we understood about financial and macro-economics is still valid. We have lived through a decade of extraordinary and unconventional monetary stimulus to prevent economies from sliding into deflation, but this effort barely succeeded in propping up growth at what have been historically low levels.

The most immediate manifestation of the shift in macro policy is that the fear of inflation, and of rising levels of government debt, that shaped a generation of policymakers is receding. Replacing it is the perspective that economic policy should now concentrate on broader social goals. Such goals are as necessary as they are admirable. They include greater social support for minority groups, greater equality in income, wealth, education, medical care, and more broad-based economic opportunity and inclusion. They should be front and center of the policies of any government in these times.

EXPLAINED: ‘Breaking the News’ Reveals Tricks the Media Use to Contort Every Story to Fit Their Agenda

Establishment media outlets require something akin to a “secret decoder ring,” Marlow observes in his best-selling blockbuster, which recently landed on the New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists.

“What is written on the page (or spoken in a broadcast) is not always literal and can only be fully understood if you know how to break the code,” he writes, providing key examples and hacks, or a “cheat sheet,” of how people can better understand the how the establishment media operates and covers the news.

The first tip: “Anything that can be politicized, will be politicized.” Any reporting on subjects that cannot be politicized, which Marlow notes is a “smaller percentage of the paper” in modern times, is typically far more credible.

Outlets, such as the New York Times, are largely driven by promoting “good” narratives while burying “bad” narratives.

“Good news” for a preferred narrative, Marlow explains, usually appears on the front page of the paper, while “bad news” — i.e. news that does not advance the left’s desired narrative — is “deep within the paper.” In some cases, the outlet refuses to cover the bad news at all. Similarly, good news on an “undesirable” narrative also appears deep within the paper, or the outlet fails to cover it at all.

“Bad news about an undesirable narrative is to be treated the same as good news for a preferred narrative,” Marlow notes.

But this practice — of promoting “good” narratives” and burying “bad” ones, goes far beyond story placement. There is a method in the articles themselves, as Breaking the News reveals:

• Within a given article, information that confirms the paper’s preferred narrative is to be featured at the top of the article, ideally in the first sentence.

• Within a given article, information that rebuts a preferred narrative or confirms an undesirable narrative is to appear deep in the article, or not at all.

• An article’s “hero” should be anyone who advances the causes of globalism, wokeness, skepticism of America and its values, and/or political leftism.

• Additional unofficial “hero points” are added or subtracted based on the hero’s race, sex, sexual orientation, and/or socioeconomic status.

• An article’s “villain” is typically anyone in the article who advances the causes of nationalism, conservatism, or traditional American values.

• A villain can also be someone who is insufficiently outraged at those who do not embrace modern woke leftism.

• When someone is a villain, their race, sex, sexual orientation, and/or socioeconomic status are mostly irrelevant unless they can be used to portray the villain in an even more unfavorable light.

• Heroes need not be actual heroes; they can simply be victims.

• Heroes get glamorous “hero shot” photographs when possible.

• Villains get unflattering photographs, or none at all.

• Errors are acceptable, so long as they do not hurt the cause of globalism or modern woke leftism.

•Errors that portray a preferred narrative negatively or an unfavorable narrative positively are never to be made. Ever.

• Corrections are to be published discreetly, deep within the paper, if at all.

NYPD boss Shea a no-show as de Blasio hammered over shooting surge

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea was once again a no-show at a press conference held by Mayor Bill de Blasio and focused on crimefighting where reporters peppered Hizzoner with questions over his administration’s handling of the Big Apple’s deadly shooting surge — and his top cop’s glaring absence.

And the embattled, $243,000-a-year NYPD head was later shielded by his staff as he fled out the back door at an awards banquet, dodging a group of reporters assembled to ask him about the mounting bloodshed in the five boroughs.

There have been more than 400 shootings in New York City since Shea last took questions in March, records show — and the pace shows no signs of abating.

That includes 150 shootings between May 3 and May 30, the most recent four-week period for which comparable figures are available. It’s a staggering 164 percent increase from the 57 reported over the same time period in 2019 and a massive jump from the 91 reported in 2020.

When repeatedly pressed by reporters about Shea’s no-show act amid the tsunami of trigger play, de Blasio claimed the matter amounted to little more than “inside baseball.”

“People can ask questions in the negative, I’m going to answer in the positive,” Hizzoner said. “I think this is a little inside baseball, with all due respect.”

“We are doing what we’ve got to do to set the strategies in place to get past this really tough moment in our city’s history — and we will overcome it,” he added.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy E-mails

Louis DeJoy (born c. 1957) is an American businessman serving as the 75th U.S. Postmaster General. He was appointed in May 2020 by the Board of Governors of the United States Postal Service. Prior to the appointment, he was a Republican Party fundraiser, the founder and CEO of a logistics and freight company, and the CEO and then board member and large shareholder of the company that acquired it. DeJoy’s company holds contracts with the USPS.

Upon assuming office in June 2020, he instituted a number of measures such as banning overtime, forbidding late or extra trips to deliver mail, removing and dismantling hundreds of high-speed mail sorting machines, and removing some mail collection boxes from streets. The changes caused significant delays of mail delivery, resulting in investigations by congressional committees and the USPS inspector general.

Controversially, the changes were implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 election, where mail-in-voting was extensively used, with President Trump and prominent Republicans deriding mail-in-voting. In August, DeJoy said that the changes would be suspended, and in October, the USPS agreed to reverse all the changes.

He told the tribunal hearing today: 'We have not committed that big a crime'

A Rochdale grooming gang member who got a girl pregnant and trafficked a 15-year-old said 'we have not committed that big a crime' as he said it would breach his human rights to be sent back to Pakistan.

Adil Khan, 51, and Qari Abdul Rauf, 52, have been told they are to be deported from the UK for the public good after both were part of a notorious gang convicted of a catalogue of serious sex offences against young girls.

The pair are appealing against a deportation order served last July. Khan told an immigration tribunal hearing today: 'We have not committed that big a crime.'

He claims to have renounced his Pakistani citizenship which would make him 'stateless' and would be a bar to deportation.

COVID Hospitalizations, Deaths for the Vaccinated More Than Triple in One Month, CDC Reports

Deaths and hospitalizations for COVID-19 infection have tripled among the fully vaccinated in the U.S. in the past month.

Deaths from COVID in those who have been fully vaccinated against the disease increased from 160 as of April 30 to 535 as of June 1, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

A total of 10,262 SARS-CoV-2 vaccine “breakthrough infections” – defined as coronavirus infections in fully vaccinated people – were reported to the CDC from 46 U.S. states and territories between January 1 and April 30, 2021, according to a report released by the CDC May 28.

About 10% (995) of the patients who became ill after vaccination before April 30 were hospitalized and the agency said it had received reports of 160 fully vaccinated patients dying from the infection.

Just days later the CDC website reported that 3,016 patients fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine had developed a “breakthrough infection” and had been hospitalized or died. “Breakthrough” deaths climbed to 535 as of June 1 compared to 160 reported deaths a month earlier.

Increasing cases of people testing positive for COVID-19 have been reported in the media. Software developer Joel Kallman, 54, died May 25, after reportedly losing a battle against the virus that causes COVID-19, though he had been vaccinated against the disease on March 26.

Last month Comedian Bill Maher tested positive for COVID-19 despite having received two doses of a coronavirus vaccine weeks earlier, as did at least nine New York Yankees players.

CDC no longer counting post-vaccine cases

“Despite the high level of vaccine efficacy, a small percentage of fully vaccinated persons (i.e. received all recommended doses of an FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine) will develop symptomatic or asymptomatic infections with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19,” the CDC said in May.

The health oversight agency added that it would only be counting COVID-19 cases and infections after vaccination that resulted in patients being hospitalized or dying from May 1 onward – discounting almost 90% of cases of vaccine failure.

The policy leaves a gaping hole in data collection on vaccine effectiveness. What’s more, since only 27% of the reported cases were asymptomatic, it also leaves a bulk of vaccinated people who are symptomatic – more than 60% of reported cases are actually ill with COVID symptoms – who are perhaps unwittingly spreading the disease because they do not suspect themselves of having a COVID infection because they have received their shots. But the CDC is no longer counting them.

The CDC did not respond to questions about how discounting the majority COVID breakthrough infections might affect analysis of data efficacy.

Given that the CDC definition of “breakthrough infection” is in “fully vaccinated” individuals, the agency is also discounting cases of COVID infection among those who have only received one dose of vaccine in its statistics.
