WASHINGTON: "President Joe Biden and Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., ended negotiations over the president’s infrastructure package on Tuesday as the two sides failed to strike a deal after weeks of talks. The administration will now focus its efforts on conversations with a bipartisan group of senators, as it continues to search for support for the president’s wide-ranging infrastructure package, an administration official said Tuesday. An administration official said the talks with Capito, the GOP’s top negotiator, fell apart after the president could not get her group to increase their overall spending on the plan, and they continued to disagree on how to pay for it. The official said Capito’s group offered $330 billion in new investment, an increase of $150 billion since their initial proposal. The president cut his top line number by $1 trillion. The White House had originally proposed a $2.2 trillion infrastructure package. But Capito pinned the blame on the president, saying she was “disappointed by his decision” to end the talks after refusing her latest offer on a revised package."

"A lawsuit filed Tuesday against the estate of Daunte Wright, the man who was shot by police during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center in April, seeks compensation for a man Wright allegedly injured before he died. The estate, [Mike] Padden [attorney] said, will not include any pending compensation by the city of Brooklyn Center that Wright’s family members could receive should they choose to sue. Rather, the estate would entail other funds acquired based on the notoriety of the case. For example, a GoFundMe fundraiser for Wright’s family has raised over $1 million. The court filing Tuesday shows plaintiff Joshua Hodges of Minneapolis is suing Wright’s estate for $50,000 in damages stemming from a March 21 altercation.

According to court documents, Hodges was sitting alone in his car in a neighborhood on Washington Avenue in North Minneapolis when he was approached by Wright and another man. Hodges said the other man opened his driver’s side door and shot him in the lower left leg, hitting an artery that caused heavy bleeding and fractured his bone, resulting in a lengthy hospitalization. His injuries are expected to be permanent in nature, the lawsuit said. Hodges said Wright then leaned in and assaulted him, causing face, mouth and teeth injuries and stole his wallet and cell phone, which were never recovered, according to the lawsuit.

A message sent to Ben Crump, a civil rights attorney believed to be representing the family, was not immediately returned Tuesday."
