Pakistan blocks US diplomat from leaving country: reports

BY JOHN BOWDEN - 05/12/18 02:37 PM EDT

Pakistani authorities have reportedly prevented an American diplomat involved in a deadly car accident from leaving Pakistan after a U.S. military plane arrived specifically to fly him out of the country.

Pakistan's The Nation and The Express Tribune reported Saturday that Col. Joseph Hall, the U.S. Embassy's military attaché in Pakistan, was prevented from leaving the country while U.S. officials were informed he could not leave until the accident was adjudicated.

An Islamabad court has ruled that Hall's diplomatic immunity does not protect him in the case of the April 7 accident, in which Hall's vehicle struck a 22-year-old motorcycle driver, killing him.

"The government can’t overlook the court orders into the matter," a source told the Tribune.

A U.S. Air Force C130 had landed at Pakistan’s Nur Khan air base to bring Hall back to the United States, but was forced to leave without him, according to local reports.

Liberal students, colleges should learn from Liberty University's civility

BY HANNAH SCHERLACHER, OPINION CONTRIBUTOR — 05/12/18 02:30 PM EDT 87 THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY CONTRIBUTORS ARE THEIR OWN AND NOT THE VIEW OF THE HILL

Commencement day — a time for colleges and universities to impart one final lesson on their graduates.

For my alma mater, Liberty University, the world’s largest evangelical Christian school and a bastion of conservatism, that lesson will come from former liberal U.S. President Jimmy Carter on Saturday, May 19.

Unlike many supposedly apolitical universities, Liberty is unapologetic about its conservative views. Its doctrinal statement declares an “absolute repudiation of political correctness and a strong commitment to political conservatism.” Arguably, the school has nothing to prove but everything to gain by inviting a liberal speaker.

Compare that to the perpetual state of outrage over conservative speakers that has swept across our nation's college campuses. Last commencement season, Notre Dame students disgraced their school by walking out during Vice President Mike Pence

Dems worry Trump will win over economy

BY AMIE PARNES - 05/12/18 12:31 PM EDT

Democrats are growing worried that the strong economy, and President Trump’s messaging about his economic stewardship, will help Republicans in this year’s midterm elections and have an even greater impact in 2020.

Even as signs point to Democrats winning back the House, the party is concerned that their hopes of a blue wave could turn into something smaller if Trump and the GOP are effective on their economic messaging ahead of November.

Interviews with more than a dozen Democrats suggest a number of people in the party are worried that Democrats aren’t doing enough to provide a counterargument.

“It’s a very big concern,” said Democratic pollster Celinda Lake. “The economy is the No. 1 issue out there for people and right now Trump has a very aggressive economic message that seems to cross traditional party lines to voters.”

The unemployment rate, which fell under former President Obama, has dropped even further since Trump took office. In April, it hit 3.9 percent, the lowest figure since December 2000.

Gina Haspel should be confirmed

BY STEVEN CASH, OPINION CONTRIBUTOR — 05/12/18 02:00 PM EDT 23 THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY CONTRIBUTORS ARE THEIR OWN AND NOT THE VIEW OF THE HILL

Gina Haspel’s nomination to be the next Director of Central Intelligence is being considered by the U.S. Senate. The first woman, and the first career intelligence professional since Director William Casey to lead the CIA, Haspel promises to be an excellent, apolitical and talented leader. She should be confirmed.

Concerns have been raised that, because of allegations of her involvement in so-called “enhanced interrogation,” Haspel should be rejected. These concerns are misplaced. Whether you believe that “enhanced interrogation” was legal or immoral, necessary or counterproductive, it is critical that we do not look to the CIA or its professional officers to make these judgments for us. Why is this so important? A bit of historical context is necessary.

In the aftermath of the Second World War, the allied victors prosecuted Nazi officials for an array of horrific crimes. The trials, held at Nuremberg, advanced in the face of a defense asserted by certain members of the Nazis who claimed they were “just following orders,” an argument that came to be named for the city in which the trials were held. That defense failed, and the “Nuremberg Defense” has come, in different contexts, to stand for a general sense of outraged rejection of the idea that simply following orders can excuse shockingly wrongful conduct.

The visceral rejection of the Nuremberg Defense is so ingrained in our politics and culture that it is difficult to even discuss it as legitimate in any context. This wholesale disavowal of the defense in our public discourse should be reexamined, and refined.
