I suspect this is the case.

Patriots have too much dirt on him and his son that is in public hands for him to have a choice.

He clearly doesn't want to be in the role, but I do think there is a deal worked out for him that he and family get a more lenient sentence in exchange for waking up the sleepiest among us with this absurdity.
