I read Piers Anthony's short story, "On the Uses of Torture", as a teenager. Horrible stuff, made me squirm.
Turns out it's an inversion of the truth: rather than "torture, all the way down" it's, "love, all the way up."

Read some of his sci-fi decades ago but never got into GoT. That said, the above gives me an idea that there are insightful reasons to expose one's self to the horrific.
