YES It can be messy. My location/property allows for that type of contingency. I'm blessed having a very big yard so the mess is far from the house. Note the grass grows best there.
You could build a blast box of sorts . Coat it with bed liner/flex seal with a strainer ?
If your location /property isn't suited for fish scales and have neighbors with sensitive noses, the old fashion way might be better.
