An SQL database wouldn't be unusual, the software suite to write SQL commands to the database would be.

A database is necessary to store party/candidate/vote data as well as ballot images, I would think. It just replaces a paper and pencil tally sheet that would need to have been archived back in the day.

I think an SQL managing software suite was found in Antrim County, not sure if on the machine itself (wouldn't think so) or on county laptops that can be used to get data off the machine. It was the middle man between the raw data on the machines to the printer, and can be used to write commands to manipulate the raw data to get it to print out to the results the laptop user wants.
