my grandmother was a strong woman. she was quiet and unassuming, yet she left her native country in her teens,
headed to the USA with only the clothes she was wearing, learned a new language, got a job and worked hard to save money,
married a fellow countryman she met in NYC and they pooled their savings, bought farm land and started a family.
she raised 5 children (a sixth died), and worked 12 hrs/day 365 days a year, never complained, always a hot meal
for a hungry stranger at the door, shared what little they had freely, and never dreamed of trying to act like a man.
although she had only a first grade education in rural russia, she knew how to cook anything, grow anything, make clothes,
make rugs, work in the garden, can fruits and vegetables, and had more common-sense knowledge about health than 1000 MDs.
she lived to be 90 before the TB she had all her life finally took her. she worked until the day she died, and was PROUD of it.
proud to be an american. and proud of her family.
