If you look in the Babylonian Talmud, which is the oldest surviving copy of the Talmud, the official reason the Jews of that time gave for why they killed Jesus was that he was a "sorcerer", or male witch. So intolerance for witches is what led to Jesus being put to death according to those who convinced the Romans to do it. Modern Christians generally know none of this.
