The entire US populace was lead to believe that Saddam was one of Nostradamus' anti-Christs. Everyone else that didn't think along those same lines were "godless" anti-American lefties. Back then, things were way more black and white due to how people absorbed information. Blaming patriotic Americans for Iraq is like blaming Dakota Skye for being raised in an abusive household. People are often products of their environment, or at least will go along with the narratives in order to keep from becoming outcasts. It's why we're here, anon.
