That why I think he needs Booth to remind him who he used to be? But then again Corsey called him "Bill" by accident, on one show. And they so slip up sometimes and he looks embarrassed.
But I do believe something was done to him.
Also, REMEMBER, he's an actor and didn't necessarily write his own material. Actors are given a script.
