G7 to Announce Joint Actions to End Public Support for Overseas Unabated Coal Generation by End of 2021

Accelerating Decarbonization and Transition from Unabated Coal: Confronting the climate crisis presents a historic opportunity to drive our economic recovery, create millions of good-paying union jobs, and build back better as we invest in a more resilient, prosperous, equitable, and secure future. Recognizing that unabated coal power generation is the single biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions globally, and consistent with President Biden’s domestic leadership, G7 Leaders will commit to an end to new direct government support for unabated international thermal coal power generation by the end of this year. To support key developing countries in their transitions away from unabated coal, Canada, Germany, the UK, and the United States will also include a new collective commitment to provide up to $2 billion to support the work of the Climate Investment Funds focused on accelerating the transition from coal for key developing countries while investing in technology, job training, and infrastructure to enable the transition to a more reliable and prosperous clean energy economy.

On the 12th Sep 2019, the main database of samples and viral sequences of the Wuhan Institute of Virology went offline. Eventually every single of the 16 virus databases managed by the WIV was taken offline. Here we show how these databases may provide essential clues at to the origins of SARS-CoV-2 and review the circumstances in which they were taken offline.

We stand together to strongly condemn conspiracy theories suggesting that COVID-19 does not have a natural origin.

Conspiracy theories do nothing but create fear, rumours, and prejudice that jeopardise our global collaboration in the fight against this virus.

Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), told a House Appropriations subcommittee that the money was funneled to the Chinese lab through the non-profit EcoHealth Alliance to fund “a modest collaboration with very respectable Chinese scientists who were world experts on coronavirus.”

But Fauci emphatically denied that the money went toward so-called “gain of function” research, which he described as “taking a virus that could infect humans and making it either more transmissible and/or pathogenic for humans.”

“That categorically was not done,” he insisted.

During Daszak’s efforts to arrange the Lancet statement, he reportedly emailed two scientists, includingDr. Ralph Baricof the University of North Carolina, who’d worked with the lead coronavirus researcher at China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology, located at the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak.

Daszak told the scientists that they “should not sign this statement, so it has some distance from us and therefore doesn’t work in a counterproductive way,” Vanity Fair said, citing emails obtained by the group US Right to Know.

“We’ll then put it out in a way that doesn’t link it back to our collaboration so we maximize an independent voice,” Daszak reportedly added.

Baric didn’t sign the Lancet statement, but last month was among 18 international scientists who signed a statement in Science Magazine calling for a “transparent, objective” investigation into the origins of COVID-19.

And while the Lancet statement included a claim that its signatories had “no competing interests,” at least six others had either worked at or been funded by EcoHealth Alliance, according to Vanity Fair.

Red-faced Thai cops admit monk 'may have escaped' temple siege

On February 16 the Thai junta invoked special powers to seal off the 1,000-acre grounds of the Wat Dhammakaya temple on the outskirts of Bangkok.

Their three week operation lurched into farce as defiant monks led them around secret tunnels, empty rooms and even to the fugitive abbot's quarters – where cops found a bed with pillows arranged under a sheet in a poor imitation of a sleeping person.

Exploring Women: Ghislaine Maxwell, Ocean Citizen

Women making a difference in the world of conservation are driven by their passion. They work tirelessly to implement programs that educate, inspire, and raise awareness for their cause. Ghislaine Maxwell is one such woman who campaigns internationally to protect our oceans.

I am mesmerized by her enthusiasm, her passion for the underwater world, and her ability to bring together a community that shares her vision. She does all that through her nonprofit, Terramar Project, which she admits “was formally launched in 2012 and was a work in progress throughout 2011.”

Ghislaine is soft-spoken but firm in her convictions to bring about change through education across a wide spectrum of projects: Global Ocean TV (GOT) The Daily Catch, Ocean Passport and others (visit Terramar’s site for the full list).

Her first introduction to the oceans, which “captured her heart and her imagination,” she credits to the venerable Captain Jacques Yves Cousteau.

Ghislaine says, “I started scuba diving at the age of nine and later spent many years traveling around the world participating in exciting research and adventures on the sea. They ranged from counting sharks in remote atolls to looking for Amelia Earhart. It was through these adventures around the globe that I came to experience firsthand the fragility of the ocean and the many assaults that are endangering it.”

“The changes I have seen in just a few decades are devastating. Giant amounts of trash and plastic swirling in the ocean, humongous industrial fishing trawlers with nets so large that twelve Boeing 747’s can fit in the mouth that kill every living thing within its grasp — humans are changing the fine balance of life in the ocean. Twenty-five percent of all marine life rely on coral reefs, and many reefs have declined by more than half and most Caribbean coral reefs will disappear in the next twenty years.”

She is very well aware of the statistics on overfishing, ocean acidification and climate change.

I find myself disheartened by the figures Ghislaine provides, but I recognize she is correct; she is educating us about facts we may not wish to hear. I believe knowledge is power and action speaks louder than words, which is what Terramar Project strives to impress upon us. We need to act now to save our oceans and we need to know how to go about it.

My first question: Why did she decide to start Terramar Project ?

“I felt that there could be a novel way to connect people to the ocean and the connection could lead to action, and action could lead to change. Nearly three quarters of the planet is covered in ocean and about two thirds of that is considered high seas, also known as international waters. The idea of the Terramar Project is to connect you to this part of the world by giving the high seas a flag (an identity), a daily newspaper, a TV show (a voice), and an ocean passport (ownership) to enable the individual to send a message saying that he/she wants the ocean to be sustainably managed for generations to come.

“I am most passionate about the ocean and the creatures that call it home. I strongly feel the need for better, more sustainable governance for the ocean to address the myriad of problems, from plastic pollution and overfishing to ocean warming and acidification — before its too late. We risk the ocean returning to the microbial soup it was millennia ago. If you are not connected to the ocean, if your livelihood does not depend on it or you do not live by the sea, it’s easy to forget or ignore the immense value it provides to all life in earth. To think that it is so vast and mysterious that its problems are too big to confront and that one person cannot do anything to change the trajectory is wrong.”

I ask Ghislaine about her vision moving ahead. What inspires her?

“I wake up everyday and think of new ways to help the Terramar Project’s partners and friends of the ocean carry the message of how important the ocean is to our lives. Seeing Terramar grow every day and seeing the difference Terramar makes inspires me to want to do more and think of new and creative ways to inspire people to join the ‘I love the Ocean Movement.’ It sends a powerful message to lawmakers that our ocean is vital to our way of life, and it needs to be protected. I would like every politician to have a view and a stand on the ocean and water-related questions. No politician should be able to say that climate change does not exist and use this as an excuse not to deal with consequences on the world.”

I am curious about experiences that have made the most impact on her life and how they may have contributed to her creating the Terramar Project.

“On my first submarine dives (she is a certified submersibles pilot) I was excited thinking that when I got to the bottom of the ocean at over 1000 feet down I might discover a new species or a sea monster but I did not… I saw a plastic hanger and not one single fish! I cried, and I knew that I wanted to do something active and positive to make the ocean a central issue. There is incontrovertible proof of man’s impact on the ocean; ocean runoff has created more than 450 dead zones in the ocean.”

We must not give up hope. I wonder what your vision is for our younger generations?

“I think the ocean, its values, and its importance to our daily lives should be taught in school. It is not just a place to go to the beach in the summer. Education and awareness within our communities is key so that fish and other creatures that call it home can be protected. That is the only way generations to come will be able to fish and enjoy the ocean as I have. Marine parks and better fishing practices can help the ocean and its marine life. If the young people of today become passionate about the ocean they will be the torch bearers, explorers, innovators, and leaders of its future.”

Ghislaine Maxwell is a powerful voice in our conservation community and a true ambassador and citizen of our oceans. I encourage all exploring women to join her in her efforts.

Her once powerhouse network seems to have become increasingly tenuous in recent years. The now defunct TerraMar website included praise from billionaire Richard Branson. That contact came about after Maxwell pitched her non-profit to theOcean Elders, a group of businessmen and scientists that aims to promote ocean conservation.

First on CNN: FBI warns lawmakers that QAnon 'digital soldiers' may become more violent

By Zachary Cohen and Whitney Wild, CNN

The FBI has warned lawmakers that online QAnon conspiracy theorists may carry out more acts of violence as they move from serving as "digital soldiers" to taking action in the real world following the January 6 US Capitol attack.

The shift is fueled by a belief among some of the conspiracy's more militant followers that they "can no longer 'trust the plan" set forth by its mysterious standard-bearer, known simply as "Q," according to an unclassified FBI threat assessment on QAnon sent to lawmakers last week, which was obtained by CNN.

But the report suggests the failure of QAnon predictions to materialize has not led to followers abandoning the conspiracy. Instead, there's a belief that individuals need to take greater control of the direction of the movement than before.

This might lead followers to seek to harm "perceived members of the 'cabal' such as Democrats and other political opposition – instead of continually awaiting Q's promised actions which have not occurred," according to the assessment.

FBI director says bureau is not investigating QAnon conspiracy 'in its own right'

"Other QAnon adherents likely will disengage from the movement or reduce their involvement in the wake of the administration change," it adds.

Frequently described as a virtual cult, QAnon is a sprawling far-right conspiracy theory that promotes the absurd and false claim that former President Donald Trump has been locked in a battle against a shadowy cabal of Satan-worshipping pedophiles made up of prominent Democratic politicians and liberal celebrities.

Members of the violent pro-Trump mob that stormed the Capitol on January 6 had ties to QAnon, and the conspiracy theory has made its way from online message boards into the political mainstream in recent years.

Titled "Adherence to QAnon Conspiracy Theory by Some Domestic Violent Extremists," the public FBI threat assessment was provided at the request of Democratic New Mexico Sen. Martin Heinrich, who earlier this year revealed that the FBI had provided lawmakers with version of the document in February that was designated "for official use only."

"The participation of some domestic violent extremists (DVE) who are also self-identified QAnon adherents in the violent siege of the US Capitol on 6 January underscores how the current environment likely will continue to act as a catalyst for some to begin accepting the legitimacy of violent action," the unclassified FBI assessment obtained by CNN says.

"The FBI has arrested more than 20 self-identified QAnon adherents who participated in the 6 January violent unlawful entry of the Capitol. These individuals were charged with violent entry and disorderly conduct in a restricted building and obstruction of an official proceeding, according to court documents and press reporting based on court documentation, public statements, and social media posts," it reads.

Heinrich, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, along with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, requested a threat assessment on QAnon in December, one month before the January 6 insurrection. They received a response from the FBI in February Heinrich said during the World Wide Threats hearing earlier this spring before asking FBI Director Christopher Wray why he "cannot or won't tell the American people directly about the threat."

>FBI warns lawmakers that QAnon 'digital soldiers' may become more violent

In April, Wray pledged to provide an assessment that could be released to the public. He also acknowledged he remained concerned about potential violence incited by QAnon but despite telling lawmakers that the conspiracy theory is something "we look at very seriously" when it is tied to a criminal act, he made clear the bureau is not investigating the online movement itself.

It was a distinction Wray was careful to highlight while testifying before the House Intelligence Committee, where he was pressed on whether the FBI is investigating elements of QAnon and asked to explain the threat it poses given its connection to the US Capitol attack earlier this year.

But despite characterizing QAnon as an online "movement" that in some instances "may be an inspiration for violent attacks," Wray reiterated that the FBI's investigative efforts regarding the conspiracy theory have been limited to instances where there are links to a federal crime.

"We're not investigating the theory in its own right," Wray told the House panel.

His comments underscored the complex challenge QAnon and other online conspiracy theories pose for the FBI as it investigates the January 6 attack and works with other federal agencies to address the threat of domestic extremism more broadly.
