I remember writing simple code for SAS when I took an econometrics course and being able to spit out all kinds of statistical information based on raw data. They just use a helluva lot more data overall more data sets from far more sources, better data, better models, a helluva lot more computing power, far more advanced software, etc. I'd imagine whatever they use is pretty damn accurate.
