OU becomes home of NOAA severe, high-impact weather institute
NORMAN, Okla (KOKH) — The University of Oklahoma has been chosen to host NOAA's Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations.
NOAA says this will promote collaborative research which will help improve our understanding of severe and high-impact weather.
The research will also help produce better forecasts and warnings that will save lives and property.
The selection comes with a $208 million reward over five years. There is a potential renewal after five years based on performance.
OU was selected after an open, competitive evaluation.
The five research themes include: Weather radar and observations research and development, Mesoscale and stormscale modeling research and development, Forecast applications improvements research and development, Subseasonal-to-seasonal prediction for extreme weather events, and Social and socioeconomic impacts of high impact weather systems.
