Dr. Paula Ionide, Ithaca College, is trying to push Critical Race Theory in the Fayetteville-Manlius (FM) School System, one of top rated in NY state.
If this school is pushed to adopt the agenda, then all the schools will follow
MANLIUS, N.Y. — School districts in New York state are discussing diversity, equity and inclusion, and how to incorporate them into the classroom. The discussion led to some heated exchanges during a Fayetteville-Manlius school board meeting on Monday, where some parents brought up critical race theory.
Some parents questioned the district's plan and assumed that it would teach critical race theory. Some were in support, and others were not.
However, no decision has been made yet, and Superintendent Dr. Craig Tice said some parents are assuming the district is farther along in its plan than it really is.
"Diversity, equity and inclusion, which is our approach, is to really follow the guidelines that the NYSED Board of Regents put forth," Tice said. "So we have some background work at this time, but I think people are assuming we are further ahead than really are.
Dr. Paula Ioanide, a director for the study of culture, race and ethnicity at Ithaca College, explained why these topics are controversial and why she believes many parents misunderstand critical race theory.
If what parents are worried about is a more accurate representation of U.S. history, that is race-conscious, doesn't ignore that race hasn't mattered, if what they take that as is that it would produce hatred, I think that would be a misinterpretation, she said.
Tice said the district's plan probably will not be ready by the fall, and that the district is taking a slow and steady approach in formulating the plan.
