China’s top spy catcher has urged the country’s intelligence officers to step up their efforts to hunt down foreign agents and insiders who collude with “anti-China” forces.
Dong Jingwei, the vice-minister of state security, made the comments on Friday at a seminar on a counter-espionage regulation that came into effect in April.
A report on the event posted on Changanjian, the social media account operated by China’s top law enforcement agency, the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission, did not specify where the seminar was held.
Dong, 57, who became vice-minister of state security in 2017, has had a long career working through the security apparatus in his native Hebei province.

We now know the name of the Chinese defector who has been working with the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) for a few months and what his position within the Chinese military and government was, among other details.
Matthew Brazil and Jeff Stein at Spy Talk reported on the “rumor,” and gave the name and background of the rumored defector:
In addition, Dong has provided DIA with the following information:
Early pathogenic studies of the virus we now know as SARS-CoV-2
Models of predicted COVID-19 spread and damage to the US and the world
Financial records detailing which exact organizations and governments funded the research on SARS-CoV-2 and other biological warfare research
Names of US citizens who provide intel to China
Names of Chinese spies working in the US or attending US universities
Financial records showing US businessmen and public officials who’ve received money from the Chinese government
Details of meetings US government officials had (perhaps unwittingly) with Chinese spies and members of Russia’s SVR
How the Chinese government gained access to a CIA communications system, leading to the death of dozens of Chinese people who were working with the CIA

BAY AREA, CA — The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into a hacker's attempt to poison an unnamed San Francisco Bay Area water treatment plant in January, NBC News reported.
The hacker knew the username and password of a former employee's TeamViewer account, which allowed them to remotely obtain access to the plant's computers, NBC reported. The hacker deleted computer programs used to treat drinking water.
The plant discovered it had been hacked the next day, then reinstalled the water treatment programs and changed its passwords, NBC reported. There were no reports of anyone being sickened by the water.
The method used in this attack is the same as one reported in February, when an Oldsmar, Florida water plant operator watched as his computer mouse moved around his screen and opened programs, eventually raising the levels of sodium hydroxide, or lye, by more than 100 fold to a level that could cause illness and corrode pipes

WASHINGTON — A group of Catholic Democrats in the House of Representatives is preparing a "statement of principles" to be released after a vote June 17 by the American Catholic bishops on a proposal to draft a document on the Eucharist that taps into ongoing debate regarding Communion and politicians who back abortion rights.
A representative for U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, a Connecticut Democrat, confirmed the document exists and is forthcoming but did not offer details as to its content or signers.
The document comes amid ongoing debate over whether bishops should deny the Eucharist to elected officials who support abortion rights legislation. The bishops voted Thursday on whether to create a document on "eucharistic coherence," which may touch on the issue of Communion bans.
But approving the proposal to draft such a document would likely have implications for both the American church and President Joe Biden, who has made his Catholic faith a talking point. Most Catholics in Congress are Democrats, in addition, and Democrats for Life currently only considers three of them to be adequately "pro-life."
