"Col. Constance L. Jenkins assumed leadership of the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases during a ceremony held Friday at Fort Detrick, becoming the first female commander of the institute during its 52-year history. She succeeds Col. E. Darrin Cox, who has led the institute since July 2019 and will become the command surgeon for the U.S. Army Forces Command Headquarters at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

During the colonel’s tenure, the institute contributed significantly to the national response to COVID-19, developing multiple animal models for testing vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics; evaluating novel drugs and antibodies as potential treatments; creating a novel biosurveillance approach to enhance screening for COVID-19 and other diseases; and providing diagnostic testing for mission-critical military personnel, the release states. Early in his tenure, Cox had to deal with the shutdown of research at the facility’s top labs for about eight months by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The order came after the CDC noted lapses in biosafety protocols during a site visit June 2019. The labs were restored to full operations in March 2020. There was never any evidence that any of the breaches were found outside authorized areas, according to previous reports."

"United Airlines is revising its appearance standards for flight attendants and other customer-facing employees to “reflect a more modernized look,” according to the carrier. The changes, which will take effect Sept. 1, will include “significant” and gender-inclusive revisions to the company’s current policies on visible tattoos, nose rings, nails, hair and makeup, according to an announcement provided to the airline’s employees on Wednesday.

“We’ve spent the last several years listening to the feedback we’ve received from our employees and our Business Resource Groups to develop these revised standards. We’re confident that these modernized and more gender-inclusive appearance standards will provide a more authentic representation of the people and cultures that make United the company it is today,” said Kate Gebo, executive vice president of HR and labor relations at United, in a statement shared to employees.

United declined to specify what exactly the revised standards would allow, instead referring to additional details to be released in July. However, a representative for the airline confirmed that previous guidelines prohibited visible tattoos and body piercings (other than earlobe piercings). Men were also not permitted to wear makeup or colored nail polish."
