Social Security Administration pays $79 million to deceased in 3 states: IG audit

SSA's Electronic Death Registration was established to prevent posthumous payments, but "SSA rejects EDR reports that do not pass its formatting and identification tests," IG found.

This week's Golden Horseshoe goes to the Social Security Administration, which paid an estimated $79 million to the deceased in just three states over a 10-year period, according to a final audit report by the agency's Office of Inspector General.

"We estimate SSA issued approximately $79 million in payments after death to 1,127 beneficiaries and four representative payees who died in Alabama, Georgia, or Illinois between January 1978 and December 2018," the report found.

The watchdog identified an additional 53,486 deceased non-beneficiaries in those states whose death information was not in the SSA's Numerical Identification System.

Examples of improper payments to the deceased the inspector general found include:

A widow in Alabama who was receiving survivor benefits died in May 2002, but the SSA continued paying her until January 2021, and improper payments totaled $263,247.

In Georgia, a disabled beneficiary died in June 2008, and SSA records did not contain a date of death. The agency overpaid $234,380 in benefits.

In Illinois, a beneficiary died in November 2007, and payments continued until the IG alerted the agency in 2020. An overpayment of $112,933 was found.

"In October and November of 2020, we referred to SSA all identified beneficiaries and representative payees who may have received improper payments after death," the IG reported. "Identifying and correcting these discrepancies will prevent approximately $14 million in additional improper payments after death over a 12-month period."

The audit was conducted from April to November 2020. As of April 2021, the SSA terminated payments to 832 deceased beneficiaries and four deceased representative payees.

The agency has initiated the recovery of $35 million in improper payments it sent out, the IG reported.

The SSA established the Electronic Death Registration for states to electronically submit death reports to the agency to prevent payments after death. Once states submit through the EDR, if the deceased data matches the agency's records, then SSA posts the information to its Numident file and terminates payments. SSA also receives death information from other sources aside from EDR, including family members and funeral directors.

"We did not determine why the deaths we identified were not in SSA's Numident or whether Alabama, Georgia, or Illinois reported those deaths to SSA," the IG reported. "However, SSA rejects EDR reports that do not pass its formatting and identification tests to prevent posting erroneous death data to its records."

Alabama began reporting deaths through the EDR in December 2010, Georgia in February of 2008 and Illinois in May 2013. Seventy-eight percent of the beneficiaries who received payments after death, the watchdog found, died after each state began using the EDR to report death information to the SSA.

The IG also said it does not believe the EDR process is the only reason deaths were not recorded in the agency's records.

In the race for the 2022 GOP nomination to be the attorney general of Texas, the incumbent is being investigated by the state bar association — and it may not hurt him. His main opponent is the grandson of one president who called Texas home and the nephew of another — and it may not help him.

The incumbent attorney general is Ken Paxton, and his challenger is Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush (son of Jeb, nephew of George W, grandson of H.W.).

Republican strategist Jeff Roe calls the looming showdown between the two "the Holy War of Texas."

"We haven't seen a battle like this since the siege at the Alamo," Roe, who ran Sen. Ted Cruz's 2016 presidential campaign, told Politico.

Paxton is a loyal Trump supporter and minor MAGA star, thanks to his role as an architect of a multistate legal effort to prevent the certification of the 2020 presidential election. He is facing a number of public scandals, including a 5-year-old indictment for securities fraud and an FBI investigation for corruption, which led to, among other things, the abrupt firing of some of Paxton's top aides last year.

Bush, the heir apparent to his family's political dynasty, is trying hard to distance himself from his family elders' public chilliness toward former President Donald Trump, to whom a significant portion of the Texas GOP electorate remains loyal.

Bush believes a change in the state AG's office is long overdue.

"For now six years, Texans are aware of security fraud charges pending against our top copper, top law enforcement office here in Texas," said Bush Thursday on "Just the News AM."

"I think a lot of our state leadership, including the governor and lieutenant governor, I was shocked and surprised by this behavior," he continued, referring to some of the accusations recently leveled against Paxton. "I'm ready for this responsibility. And I'm ready to do without the baggage and investigations and an endless scandal."

Paxton's conduct while at the helm of "the most important law firm in our state" has provoked a "mass exodus of young Christian attorneys that serve causes greater than self," Bush contends. "And so, this is about the character and the competency of running" that office.

Paxton, who also appeared on "Just the News AM" last week, calls the charges against him trumped up and politically motivated, especially the Texas bar's investigation of him for filing a "frivolous lawsuit" challenging President Biden's 2020 victory.

"I mean, I have every right as an elected officer of the people, a constitutional officer of Texas, to file any lawsuit that I want, and yet somehow I can be investigated by the state bar for filing that lawsuit," he lamented. "To me, it's purely political, and certainly is not right."

Twitter Allows Harmful Disinformation to Trend Following Pride Parade Accident in Florida

During a Pride parade near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Saturday evening, a pickup truck plowed into parade participants, killing one person and seriously injuring another. Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz was in a nearby car.

The mayor pounced and called it “terrorism” without having any facts.

“This is a terrorist attack against the LGBT community,” (Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean ) Trantalis told reporters. “This is exactly what it is. Hardly an accident.”

Leftwing tweeters quickly tied the incident to the law DeSantis signed which allows individuals endangered by riots that take over public streets to drive on if they are endangered. This law is clearly intended to protect innocent people from violent antifa rioters who have a habit of taking over streets illegally, surrounding drivers, bashing their cars and in some cases assaulting or even shooting them. It has nothing to do with permitted parades such as the one that was taking place in Fort Lauderdale.

Police asked for patience in Fort Lauderdale. That’s about as easy to find in our social media-driven culture as unobtainium.

Mayor Trantalis’s terrorism claim went straight to media, who at least asked if he knew what he was talking about.

The facts are emerging on the incident in Florida. It was apparently not an act of terrorism as Mayor Trantalis irresponsibly declared. It was apparently an accident and definitely had nothing at all to do with DeSantis. The law DeSantis signed would not permit a wanton attack on a permitted event or demonstration. It protects innocent people from having their lives destroyed by the left’s violent antifa brownshirts.

The driver of the truck was a parade participant. His foot apparently got stuck and he accidentally accelerated.

The driver and the victims were a part of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus family, according to a statement reported by news outlets from the group’s president, Justin Knight.

“To my knowledge it was an accident. This was not an attack on the LGBTQ community,” Knight said in the statement. “We anticipate more details to follow and ask for the community’s love and support.”

How responsible. Knight would make a better mayor than the opportunist Trantalis — who owes the country an apology and Fort Lauderdale his resignation.

DeSantis had nothing to do with any of this. Nevertheless, as of this writing, Twitter is allowing the hashtag #DeathSantis to trend. Twitter is allowing anyone and everyone who wants to blame DeSantis and turn the accident into yet another point of division in a nation that may be hopelessly divided now to flog it and push disinformation. Twitter isn’t labeling any of the dishonest tweets as disinformation. It’s not doing anything at all to even slow the spread of viral lies despite the fact that everyone knows it could.

Twitter doesn’t care. Jack Dorsey’s company is knowingly allowing thousands of tweets pushing disinformation about the accident. He doesn’t care about the harm he is actively doing, going by his own disinformation and misinformation standards.

Meanwhile, Dorsey’s platform suspended Barstool Sports’ Dave Portnoy for no reason, only dropping the suspension when the outcry against it grew loud enough.

There was a reason for Portnoy’s suspension: He’s a popular conservative. That’s it. That’s all Twitter needs most of the time.

‘Delta’ COVID-19 Variant Likely to Become Dominant in US: CDC Director

The head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the “Delta” variant of COVID-19 could become the most common strain of the virus in the United States.

“It’s more transmissible than the Alpha variant, or the UK variant, that we have here,” Dr. Rochelle Walensky told ABC News last week. “We saw that quickly become the dominant strain in a period of one or two months, and I anticipate that is going to be what happens with the Delta strain here.”

Health officials, including Walensky, have said that current COVID-19 vaccines remain effective against the strain.

The Delta variant, also known as B.1.617.2, was first identified late last year. Officials said that it spread rapidly throughout India earlier this year before spreading to dozens of other countries.

President Joe Biden, meanwhile said he doesn’t believe the Delta variant will prompt lockdowns like the ones that were authorized by state and local governments last year.

“I don’t think so because so many people have already been vaccinated,” Biden said Friday at the White House. “But the Delta variant can cause more people to die in areas where people have not been vaccinated,” he added. “So, no, it’s not a lockdown, but some areas will be very hurt.”

Previously Deported MS-13 Rapist Caught Crossing Border With Migrant Families In Texas: CBP

EDINBURG, Texas – (CBP) – McAllen Border Patrol Station (MCS) agents arrested a Mara-Salvatrucha (MS-13) and a migrant previously convicted of rape.

Last Wednesday, a group of 53 migrants mainly composed of families entered the United States illegally near Hidalgo, Texas. During processing, MCS agents discovered a male Salvadoran national traveling among the group of migrants was a Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang member.

Shortly after, agents assigned to MCS apprehended a group of 17 migrants near Hidalgo, Texas. As they were being processed, it was discovered that a national of El Salvador, was arrested by the Southampton Police Department in New York. He was subsequently convicted for Rape-3nd Degree and sentenced to six years’ probation. He also has a previous removal from the United States.

Border Patrol processed the subjects accordingly.

To your point, this is something mobilizing people and resonating very deeply. Republican strategist Brad Todd said, “you mentioned critical race theory a couple of times. This is a parent-led backlash at the grassroots level.”

Brad Todd said, “I disagree. I think it started because parents have had it with the education bureaucracy after COVID. They’re fed up with it. They tend to trust Democrats on education funding, but they trust Republicans on education accountability. Major Drone Attack On Saudi Arabia Just After US Missile Battery Drawdown Revealed

On Saturday a major attack was reportedly launched out of Yemen on two cities in Saud Arabia's south, Khamis Mushait and Najran, which utilized explosive-laden drones.

The swarm of drones entering the kingdom's airspace reportedly spanned multiple hours, according to regional reports, which cited up to 17 drones intercepted by Saudi anti-air defenses. "The interception operations were successful," the Saudi military said, noting that many were destroyed prior to entering Saudi airspace while still over Yemen.

"Saudi Arabia’s air defenses destroyed 17 Houthi drones launched toward the Kingdom’s southern region on Saturday," regional English language source Arab News details of the attacks. "A booby-trapped drone targeted Khamis Mushait early morning before seven more targeting the southern region were intercepted in Yemeni airspace during the afternoon."

"Khamis Mushait was again targeted by two drones in the evening," the report continued. "Another drone targeted Najran late evening before six more were shot down near midnight."

Arab Gulf leaders were unanimous in their condemnation of what they called Yemeni Houthi attempts at "systematically targeting civilians." The Saudis and their allies, including US officials, have long blamed Iran for supporting and supplying such Houthi operations.

Other regional sources cited what appeared a Houthi claim of responsibility for the drones attacks: "Earlier on Saturday, Iranian-backed Houthi rebels tweeted that a drone was launched in the morning toward King Khaled air base in Khamis Mushait," Israel's i24 news wrote.

CBC Turns Off Facebook Comments To Protect "Fragile" Journalists' Mental Health And "Protect Free Speech"

In a move that can only be described as the pinnacle of embracing snowflake culture, the CBC has said this week it is going to close comments on all of its news links and video posts to Facebook pages to protect the mental health of its journalists.

Journalists - who used to be rugged and used to deal with varying opinions as part of the job description - are "fragile" and "in need of attention", like many other Canadians post-pandemic, the CBC wrote last week. Increasingly, they are facing "vitriol and harassment" for doing their jobs, the report notes.

"For journalists, platforms like Twitter can be a great way to find sources and promote their work, but also a cesspool of hatred. Increasingly, reporters are also physically attacked," Andre Picard told CBC.

Women and journalists of color have seen increased abuse, according to CBC President Catherine Tait. In her opinion, those threats pose attacks to "free speech and democracy".

Black Crowd Cheers as White Woman is Savagely Beaten at New Jersey Juneteenth Riot

A Celebration to Mark the 1865 End of Slavery Devolved into a Full Scale Riot in Long Branch, NJ

A predominantly black crowd of Juneteenth revelers cheered as a white woman was savagely beaten in the streets of a Long Branch, New Jersey commercial district while the city marked the nation’s first Juneteenth federal holiday. Police from several jurisdictions later responded to the scene while retail employees remained trapped in their shops as the celebration commemorating the end of slavery devolved into a riot.

According to local media reports, the Juneteenth celebration, held in Long Branch’s Pier Village, devolved into a full-scale riot with hundreds of celebration attendees turning on their host city and smashing up businesses and property throughout the Pier Village area.

Local police advised residents to avoid the area, dispatching officers in riot gear to quell the unrest as retail employees, many of whom are under the age of 18, remained trapped in their places of employment as the crowd targeted storefronts for destruction. Additionally, police advised that “numerous fights” involving attacks on officers had broken out in the streets.

“Police have area locked down due to riots in the area,” a bulletin from the Ocean County Scanner read as the Juneteenth violence played out. “Parents are reporting their children are locked in businesses they work in with no way out. Reports of police in riot gear trying to control the scene. Numerous fights involving police, and vandalism. Avoid the area.”

Video footage recorded at the scene of the riotous Juneteenth celebration shows a pair of black women ruthlessly beating a white female attendee, as countless members of the crowd surrounded the group cheering on the violence and, at times, throwing their own jabs at the victim of the attack.

Additional video shows a mob of hundreds of rioters tearing through city streets as police struggled to keep the situation under control. As has been seen in recent race riots throughout the country, several rioters took breaks from the action to twerk while others danced on the tops of moving vehicles.

All told, police from multiple jurisdictions, including state authorities, descended on the riotous scene, eventually regaining control of the situation. While media reports on the riot have been few and far between, local outlets report that the riot’s cause is “unknown.” It is unclear how many – if any – arrests were made.
