If you place something flat (I used old plywood sheets) around the coop, and let bugs gather under it, you can lift it and rake the bugs into the coop. You'll get a feel for how many to feed your girls without depleting the population too much to recover in time for the next round.

In very dry climates, you may need to water that colony once in a while, just keep it somewhat moist.

The protein boost will turn the yokes orange, and make them taste like eggs should.

It wasn't long, and the mere sight of me with a leaf rake would start the hens squawking and dancing as I'd approach.

Accidental discovery made while cleaning up, days later, after expanding my set up. Ended up with enough colonies that I would only have to hit each about once a week, while feeding daily.

Got to where the girls would ignore store bought feed, unless I missed a day.

Made a bug rancher out of me.
