The Washington Post is taking heat after it recently ran a video encouraging Americans to take part in "white accountability groups" and "force themselves into 'a period of deep shame' over their skin color,'" the Daily Mail reported Monday.
The 5-minute video titled, "What is White racial identity and why is it important?" featured several mental health experts who discussed ways for white people to understand "your whiteness and the ways that white supremacy benefits you."
What are the details of the episode?
The video, the latest in a series titled, "The New Normal" and which aired on Friday, explores the idea of white people coming together to form white privilege accountability groups in order to shame themselves over being born white in a racist world.
Host Nicole Ellis addressed the issue along with Resmaa Manakem — an author and "trauma specialist" — who said that such gatherings ought to take place over a period of years for white people to understand what it means to be black in America.
"An antiracist culture does not exist among white people," Manakem insisted. "White people need to start getting together specifically around race." He also insisted that such groups should meet and work out their identities for a period of at least five years.
Ilyse Kennedy, a trauma therapist, agreed, and said that she personally engaged in such catharsis, and said the move is necessary for white people to experience a "period of deep shame."
Kennedy added that members of such groups need to acknowledge "the harm that our ancestors have caused."
What has been the response?
According to the Daily Mail, the episode faced criticism and derision over its apparent clarion call to perpetuate white shame.
Christopher Rufo, senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, blasted the episode and tweeted, "I'm fighting against race supremacy; the Washington Post wants to install it everywhere."
He added, "The game is that they want to create an essentialized racial category ("whiteness"), load it with negative connotations, then impose it on individuals through guilt, shame, and school indoctrination. This approach is reductive, manipulative, and malicious. Don't fall for it."
"This is a very strange pseudoreligious movement that is likely to do more harm than good," Jesse Singal, writer and podcaster, added. The outlet pointed to Twitter user AG, who blasted the episode and wrote, "A 5 minute video propagating ignorant neoracist nonsense. It's really astonishing the extent to which this stuff is becoming mainstream and normalized, especially by the press."

Unexplained Spirals Are Suddenly Appearing in the Skies Over the Pacific
Over the previous few days, thousands of individuals have reported witnessing unusual spirals in the skies above the Pacific Ocean.
On Friday, June 18, people across the south Pacific islands of New Caledonia, Tokelau, Samoa, and Fiji all reported seeing the same spiral phenomenon in the sky.

According to New Caledonia’s Astronomy Association, the culprit was a Chinese rocket that took off from Xichang launch centre on Friday.
“Jonathan McDowell, an American astronomer who lists all manoeuvres and orbital launches on the planet, has confirmed it was the second floor of a Chinese Long March 2 C rocket, which took off June 18 at 06 h25 UTC from Xichang launch center, with 4 satellites on board,” Association Calédonienne d’Astronomie posted on Facebook.
“Amaury Bellee, who contacted him, explains: ‘After completing its mission, the floor would have expelled his fuel (from UDMH and nitrogen peroxide) to passivate, i.e. avoiding it exploding into orbit due to the residual pressure in the tanks. This is the phenomenon you’ve been observing.’”

On 17 August 1955, President Dwight D. Eisenhower prescribed a Code of Conduct for members of the Armed Forces of the United States. The purpose was to inform each service member in a combat unit about their basic responsibilities when engaged in combat or if they were captured by enemy forces. Of the six articles, the first and sixth articles are particularly powerful reminders about the Armed Forces’ mission and the dedication each member requires to complete that mission:

Non-essential travel outside of Sydney has been banned and masks made mandatory everywhere including workplaces.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced the sweeping new restrictions for roughly 900,000 Sydney residents on Wednesday as the state’s coronavirus outbreak spreads.
Ms Berejiklian said people who live or work in the seven affected local government areas – City of Sydney, Waverley, Randwick, Canada Bay, Inner West, Bayside and Woollahra – “cannot travel outside Sydney” unless they are “visiting a relative in care or have to go to work”.
“So unless it is essential travel, you should not be going outside metropolitan Sydney for the next week, and we apologise in advance that this impacts some people’s ability to travel during the school holidays,” she said.
Dancing limits for weddings are also back, with no more than 20 people allowed on the dance floor. The one person per four square metre rule is also being reintroduced for all indoor and outdoor settings, including weddings and funerals.
“All people must be seated at any setting,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“We don’t want mingling. Mingling means transferring the virus so … all consumption at hospitality venues or events has to be seated and with good social distancing. No singing or dancing at any venue except weddings, which we will allow 20 people on the dance floor at any given time, but no dancing or singing, whether a place of worship, a nightclub, anywhere else but for weddings.”
The Premier said the government knew the rules would “have an impact” on family gatherings like weddings and funerals but “these are measures we have to take charge of now so we don’t have to do anything more severe down the track”.
