City of West Palm Beach defends waiting 10 days to alert public about toxic water
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A water advisory remains in effect Tuesday, and vulnerable residents like young children and the elderly should avoid consuming West Palm Beach tap water until further notice.
The City of West Palm Beach announced the advisory on May 29 due to high levels of toxins from blue-green algae detected. The city knew about the presence of the toxins as far back as May 3, when a sample showed levels lower than what would initiate a health advisory.
Dr. Poonam Kalkat, Director of Public Utilities for the City of West Palm Beach, told CBS12 News that another sample was taken on May 17.
Those results, which came back May 19, showed the toxin cylindrospermopsin was detected at 1.5 parts per billion, twice the level that is considered to be harmful for vulnerable populations.
CBS12 News asked Dr. Kalkat why the city did not alert residents on May 19. She said they wanted to be sure the high reading was accurate, adding that this is the first time a municipality in Florida has detected this particular toxin in its drinking water.
"It's not something that's a regulated compound that has a prescribed set of instructions for what to do," Dr. Kalkat said. "That's why we needed confirmation that this result was correct that's what we decided to do."
The City of West Palm Beach tested the water for three consecutive days after that, and confirmed the high levels of toxins from blue-green algae.
Even after that confirmation, the city did not immediately notify residents about the health hazard. Officials say they need to go through the Department of Health (DOH) for guidance first.
"Everything has to be done with the department of health approval, and you don't want to put something out that you're not sure of," she said.
The city received guidance from the DOH on May 28, and issued the water advisory the following day.
"That's even more disappointing that we as a people are waiting 10 days for news like this," said Brandy Saturne, a West Palm Beach resident and mother of a toddler.
She has been buying bottled water and trying to keep her young son from exposure to the toxins. She is now wondering if she had been giving him unsafe drinking water in the 10-day window the city knew about the test results, but did not publicly announce them.
"It's really disheartening that the city knew but we didn't know as residents," she said. "We live here, grew up here, this is our home. Having safe clean water is part of our livelihood."
City officials initially said they expected the water advisory to last the rest of the week.
