I think a lot to do with this type of outlook on life is never having had a real childhood. By that I mean enough experiences and enough things that you absolutely loved doing as a kid before drugs came along.
At some point, memories can provide the impetus to go back to a simpler time, and renew activities that you loved doing before drugs.
If a well-rounded childhood isn't there, especially relative to nature/outdoors, isn't there, there isn't much of a chance.
