We spent a week on Molokai this Spring. At first, we loved the natural beauty of this island and because we are low-key kind of people, the issue of "nothing to do" never came up. The people, at first, seemed very nice. We loved it for a couple of days.

Until,

We started scouting beaches to play at. The best beaches were busy with local folks - even midweek/midday - who glared and snarled at you when you (little haoles in a rental car) pulled up. The worst beaches were very hot, remote and had people living there in tents who also snarled at you. Remote is OK, dangerous is not.

Nobody made friendly eye contact except shop owners or cashiers at the grocery store ("So, what brings you folks here?") - we think they were working very hard to size us up by getting "friendly". Were we buying land? Were we McAfee people or Monsanto scientists? I understand the cautious aloha but it was really really sad.

Car rental guys had stickers that said "Molokai for visiting only" - discouraging purchasing land as it is cheaper there than Mauiโ€”-and were not at all friendly. They are making a point, obviously, that they don't want it to turn into a little Maui. Got it. Thanks for the welcome.

Are you a fish lover? Think you will find it on Molokai? Good luck. We could not find fresh fish on the entire island. Maybe we were missing something, but I am a pretty good researcher and could not find it. I think you actually have to go fishing to get some.

We were, at first, having fun, until paranoia set in: we felt as if we were being watched. We really wanted to love Molokai - the land, the people, the-everything. We tried very hard, but we were met with very creepy looks from locals and were truly frightened by the time we leftโ€“

oh yeah, and nearly EVERY place you could possibly stay at was run-down, infested, and well, gross. Thereby adding to a sense of Stephen-King-Inspired paranoia.

People will hate me for posting this. I suppose I would. But, I would love to hear replies to convince me otherwise. I do hope I just was imagining things.

FBMD means facebook metadata. If I'm not mistaken, it was uploaded to instagram which is owned by Facebook. Basically, FB 'watermarks' the images that show up on their site - probably to track where images start and end up.

You can find the same thing (with a different number/letter string of course) on any pic pulled from IG or FB.
