There are mounds from the Mississippians that inhabited the region in the 1200-1400 timeframe scattered about that may fuel that myth.

Cairo's demise dates back even further from the racial tensions there.

It was supposed to grow to the size of St. Louis and even supersede it.

But, German immigrants loved St. Louis and went there in droves during the 1800's.

That pretty much sealed Cairo's fate as all the river traffic and business went to STL instead.
