These are Orthodox Christian priests and monks. Either Russian or Bulgarian. The clothes are partly determined by the cold northern climate that they live in. The monks robes are covered with prayers and icons. Technically an icon is any image that reminds one of God or a saint, ie. a crucifix is an icon. In Bulgaria there are still caves with these ancient icons scratched in the walls of hermits cells.
