Because they are the #1 selling rifle in the U.S. makes it the "soup of the day". It is the Second Amendment that is the real target. The robust ownership and enthusiasm of the AR type rifles are what is stopping them. If we didn't have AR's it would be some other firearm representing the same object of scorn.
"Going through a ton of ammo" is dictated by the operator not the firearm.
