GMB host Madeley exposes communist SAGE committee member
Genial daytime television personality, Richard Madeley found himself at the centre of a vicious Twitter storm yesterday after he courteously invited a scientist to deny her advice to the government as a member of the SAGE committee was coloured by her extreme politics.
Yesterday, the prime minister announced Britain would be unlocked from Covid restrictions on July 19, a move repelled by Keir Starmer. “We need to keep key protections in place, including masks, including ventilation, and crucially, something we’ve been asking for throughout the pandemic, proper payments for those that need to self-isolate,” struck back the Labour leader.
In advance of a Downing Street announcement, clinical psychologist, Susan Michie was brought onto ITV’s Good Morning Britain to discuss the prospect of freedom day while Covid infections rise. She insisted lockdown must be prolonged, face masks must continue to be mandatory because “we’re still in a critical situation,” said Michie.
She and host Madeley engaged in a thorny discussion in which the GMB host suggested the country could perhaps afford to relax measures given that so many Brits are vaccinated.
“Yes, the percentage rise in hospitalisations has gone up, I think 24%,” asserted Madeley. “That sounds a lot but in real numbers, it is starting from a very low level.”
“But it’s increasing”, replied Michie.
In a breathtaking turn, Madeley asked: “You’ve been a member of the Communist Party for about 40 years now, you’re still a member, and we know that they’re statist. We look at Communist countries around the world and we see that they are tremendously top-down dominant and controlled societies that they rule over.
“I just wonder… if your politics actually informs your sense of control? It’s not just the medical arguments, but you have a kind of a political bent to want the state to tell people what to do?”
A dead-faced Michie replied: “I’ve come on your programme as a scientist, as do all people who come on to your programme as scientists. They come on to talk about the evidence, relevant theories, how we approach our scientific disciplines, and you don’t ask other scientists about politics so I’m very happy to speak about science which is what my job is and to limit it to that.”
Madeley urged the seething professor to explicitly deny her advice was compromised by her political fundamentalism – she has been a member of the Communist Party for forty years.
“I’m saying that I agreed to come on this programme as a scientist and I’m very happy to talk to you about the issues that you’re raising as a scientist which is the same for other scientists that you invite on to the programme,” she replied.
Twitter quickly lit up with apparatchiks laying into Madeley, branding him “a dangerous” man amid swirling rumours that radical leftists would target GMB with an advertising boycott in the same manner as GB News.
But right-wing figures were quick to cheer on Michie’s exposure as a card-carrying commie – prior to yesterday, she had caused a minor rumble when telling Channel 5 Covid restrictions should remain in place “forever”, a handful of publications picked up on her unpalatable politics in their reporting, but that was it.
“A behavioural scientist who wants mask mandates to continue forever freaked out and refused to answer the question when asked if her lifetime membership of the Communist Party informed her beliefs,” wrote conservative commentator, Paul Joseph Watson.
In another post, Watson wrote: “Reminder that ‘Communist’ Michie is literally one of the behavioural scientists who used ‘totalitarian’, ‘unethical’ fear tactics to terrify the British public, yet the bed-wetters on here [Twitter] think it’s ‘misogynistic’ to ask about her political beliefs.”
Watson was not the only person to take issue with Michie’s academic background. “Another psychologist labelling herself as a scientist,” wrote one person on social media. “The first mistake was treating a psychologist as a scientist,” said another.
While others simply felt Madeley’s line of questioning was right and proper. One such individual stated: “I don’t see any reason why Richard Madeley (or even GMB) should apologise for asking her a question as pertinent as that.”
