Self righteousness is the marriage of a false sense of moral authority and lack of self-confidence. It's what leads to narcissism.
Don't let them steer reality.
Why do you think they reject truth when it's staring them in the face? Toss in some confirmation bias and scores of entertainment, distractions, and sex, and all of a sudden you have a never ending whirlpool of decent into madness. It's inverse of true progress of self, and that's what they want to prevent.
