24 arrested in Bakersfield Police child predator operation

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — During a multiagency operation, the Bakersfield Police Department and other agencies arrested 24 people in a child predator operation.

On June 25th and 26th, BPD officers conducted an operation designed to identify individuals soliciting juveniles online for sex and conducting sex registrant compliance checks.

During this operation, undercover detectives posing as a juvenile were contacted by several individuals engaging in inappropriate communication, and requesting to meet for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity.

Detectives responded to the arranged meeting location and arrested the following individuals for unlawful communication with a minor, and solicitation of a minor for sex:

Andrew Cowells: Indiana teacher accused of touching boys in bathroom, watching them urinate

ELKHART, INDIANA: A high school teacher from Indiana has been fired after he was arrested for inappropriately touching his students in a school bathroom and repeatedly passing comments of sexual nature in the classroom. The details of the case were revealed in court documents obtained by the media, that identify the accused as Andrew Cowells, who allegedly tried to watch at least two underage boys urinate. Cowells also encouraged another boy to touch himself and told his class that he wanted a 15-year-old student to "grind" on him, said police. Following his arrest, Cowells is facing a total of 18 sex crime charges.

Arrested for more than a dozen felonies on Wednesday, June 23, news of the two-month investigation into Cowell's predatory nature comes after an Alabama teacher shot herself dead, two days after getting arrested on rape and sodomy charges on May 27. In two different Ohio cases, two teachers were also sentenced for having sex with minors. One of them is a 29-year-old teacher, recently jailed for 54-months for having sex with two teenage boys in a hotel room. The other teacher was given a four-year jail sentence for having sex with a 14-year-old boy with behavioral issues.

Who is Andrew Cowells?

The 47-year-old social studies teacher at Concord High School in Elkhart, near the Indiana-Michigan border, had taught for 20 years in the district before he was arrested and subsequently fired following the incidents. Cowells, who was once the Concord Teachers Association's president, was reported to the police after school staff learned of “inappropriate comments of a sexual nature” that he had allegedly made to students on May 5, 2021. Soon cops interviewed students aged 15 and 16 and obtained a warrant for Cowell's phone as part of the investigation into the matter.

The probe into Cowell's phone turned up several images of children in the nude, with teenage boys “in various stages of undress” and an adult male sexually assaulting a minor, reveals the affidavit. The superintendent of Concord Community Schools however said that none of the children from the photos are students in the school district, The Goshen News reported.

Perth and Peel enter full four-day lockdown after third COVID-19 case

Perth and Peel have entered a full four-day lockdown from midnight after a third COVID-19 case was recorded in the area.

The lockdown comes after WA Premier Mark McGowan confirmed that the original case in the outbreak — case 1022 — has the Delta variant of the virus.

The new case — case 1024 — is a man in his 30s who worked at the Indian Ocean Brewery and also ate there last Tuesday, the same night as case 1022.

There are now three cases in Western Australia as part of the new outbreak.

Mr McGowan said he hoped the lockdown would be a "circuit breaker" needed for testing and contact tracers to get on top of the outbreak.

Clive Palmer slammed over 'scaremongering' COVID-19 flyers

Controversial businessman and former MP Clive Palmer have been slammed by medical authorities after being behind a wave of flyers accused of spreading COVID-19 misinformation across Australia.

The yellow flyers, labelled with the words "Urgent Communication", contain claims about the state of the country's pandemic situation as well claims about the multiple COVID-19 vaccines available to Australians.

The flyer's statement also implicates Australia's medical watchdog, claiming "The Therapeutic Goods Administration and the Government are spreading misleading information designed to create fear in the population".

The stunt has been labelled "misinformation at best" by both the TGA and Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, with PSA President Chris Freeman saying the information presented could be "dangerous".

Statements made in the flyer also include "There is no pandemic in Australia".

"The more significant side effects are very very rare … and drug companies will still be held to account should things go wrong," PSA President Chris Freeman told 9News.

Residents have also accused Mr Palmer of "scaremongering" through the campaign, with some showing concern for how it might affect older Australian's decision making.

"I just don't know what to believe and my concern is for people my age," Brisbane resident Gloria told 9News.

"There are some people that really are a bit nervous about it and when you read that it makes you more nervous … this is too serious to play around with."

Mr Palmer has "strongly defended" the campaign in a statement, saying "all of the advertisements quoted TGA reported facts.

New Hampshire School District Official Slams Anti-White CRT Propaganda, Says ‘F**k You’ In Stinging Resignation Letter

A New Hampshire school district site coordinator has stood up against anti-white CRT propaganda being pushed as “training” by the board, posting his stinging resignation letter on social media.

Daniel Concannon, a 21st Century Leaning Center site coordinator for the Manchester School District in New Hampshire, first became concerned about anti-white propaganda, also known as “critical race theory,” being pushed as official training by the district in March this year. All the site coordinators, including Concannon, had received an email from Liz Penn, the program coordinator, instructing them to complete a series of trainings by March 5th, including one entitled “white privilege.”

The training, as detailed by Concannon in a HR complaint, repeatedly referred to the problem of “white privilege” and the term “whiteness” around 18 times, claimed that children not being able to pronounce names of foreign students at first try is racist, and included openly political editorials and essays arguing that meritocracy is a myth and all white people are oppressors. Although clearly mandatory at first, with deadlines included to complete the training, it was retroactively determined to not be mandatory following Concannon’s initial complaint, and backlash in the media.

After getting nowhere, despite noting that such training would be in violation of both Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and the Manchester School District’s own anti-harassment policy, Concannon resigned his position from the New Hampshire board in a stinging letter posted to social media, where he slammed the anti-white training.

Addressed to numerous leaders at the school district, including the Chief Equity Officer, Concannon said that “in light of the [district’s] endorsement of the dehumanization and hatred of white people,” he had to resign his position. He took the opportunity in the letter to mock the woke language and ideology promoted by the district, including demanding the immediate gender reassignment surgery of the board for referring to employees only as male or female, and including around 100 different neopronouns in his email signature.

WHO reinstates mask recommendations for fully vaccinated, as Delta variant spreads

"Vaccine alone won’t stop community transmission," said WHO official Dr. Mariangela Simao of the Delta variant.

The World Health Organization is recommending face coverings for people vaccinated for COVID-19 amid concerns about the spread of the Delta variant, thought to be more contagious than strains earlier in the pandemic.

"Vaccine alone won’t stop community transmission," Dr. Mariangela Simao, an assistant WHO director, said in a briefing Friday in Geneva, according to CNBC. "People need to continue to use masks consistently, be in ventilated spaces, hand hygiene … the physical distance, avoid crowding. This still continues to be extremely important, even if you’re vaccinated when you have a community transmission ongoing."

The variant is reportedly represents in roughly 90% of new cases in the United Kingdom and 20% of the new ones in the United States.

However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not changed its recommendation about those being fully vaccinated not having to wear a mask in most all settings.

In Australia, virus outbreaks across the country, believed related to the variant, has resulted in the cities of Sydney and Darwin being locked down. Perth has made masks compulsory for three days and warned a lockdown could follow after a resident tested positive after visiting Sydney more than a week ago.

In addition, the cities of Brisbane and Canberra have or will soon make wearing masks compulsory, according to the Associated Press.

PM Morrison announces COVID-19 vaccine to be mandatory for aged care workers

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says National Cabinet has agreed on "mandatory vaccination" of all the residential aged care workforce against COVID-19 as a condition of working in the sector.

The announcement comes amid a National Cabinet meeting in response to the growing COVID outbreak across parts of the country.

"The first I would note is we have agreed to mandate vaccination to have at least one dose by mid September 2021 of all residential aged care workforce against COVID-19 as a condition of working in a residential aged care facility," the Prime Minister said on Monday evening.

"That will be implemented in a partnership of the Commonwealth and the states – preferably using the same system that is used for having mandatory vaccines for the flu for aged care workers that is traditionally done through state public health orders.

"But the Commonwealth will work together with the states to ensure compliance with those orders because we have those direct relationships and reporting relationships with the aged care providers."

Mr Morrison also said that there be further "risk and benefit assessment" conducted to be reported back to National Cabinet by early August to make sure there are "no unintended consequences" of this decision such as having a "negative impact" on available workforce.

"To support that, the Commonwealth has decided today and I've signed off on implementation of a $11 million grant program to encourage residential aged care facilities to provide staff with leave to get vaccinated," Mr Morrison said.

Death of John McAfee, bitcoin evangelist and digital outlaw, ruled suicide as family demands second investigation

Software magnate and bitcoin evangelist John McAfee’s death has been confirmed a suicide, according to a preliminary autopsy conducted in the Spanish prison he had been authorized to leave just hours before his death.

McAfee was cleared to be extradited to the US on Wednesday after spending eight months imprisoned in Spain. According to the preliminary autopsy, he hanged himself in his cell. He was allegedly found by prison workers in the pretrial detention area.

The eccentric software developer, who had been imprisoned awaiting extradition to the US on charges of four years’ tax evasion, was preparing to appeal the judge’s decision, according to sources including his defense lawyers, who were already preparing an appeal. He reportedly left a suicide note in his pants pocket.

McAfee was imprisoned in Sant Esteve Sesrovires in Barcelona, according to sources familiar with the situation. His widow, Janice, told local press that not only had he not been suicidal, but that he had just that day spoken to her in a way that suggested he was not suicidal. She has demanded a “thorough investigation” into his death and blamed the US government for his death.

She also noted McAfee had a “plan” in place to respond to any extradition attempts, implying he had some sort of “plan B” to escape extradition to the US, and argued his death would be the result of foul play by the US rather than any violence by his own hand. McAfee even had a tattoo inked on his bicep with the word “whackd,” and tweeted in October that if he were to “hang [him]self, a la Epstein, it will be no fault of [his].”

Another tweet doubled down on the suggestion US officials were after him and included a photo of the tattoo.

The software developer behind McAfee AntiVirus had allegedly tried to kill himself once before, in February, while housed in a different part of the Barcelona jail, but a psychiatrist supposedly ruled the attempt was an attention-seeking maneuver and moved him to another part of the facility.

McAfee allegedly had a “dead-man’s switch,” which would release a large number of “sensitive documents,” according to journalist Glenn Greenwald. It’s not clear what that cache contained or when and where it is set to be released. The family requested a second, independent autopsy before the first one had concluded.

‘Horrible massacre’: More than 50 warders targeted in probe over heavy-handed suppression of Covid-19 riot in Italian prison

Over 50 warders have been targeted by Italy’s judiciary, with more than 20 in detention or under house arrest, amid a probe into a major prison riot. Warders’ unions branded the measures “disproportionate” and “incomprehensible.”

The pre-trial measures were implemented on Monday, affecting prison warders who are under investigation by an Italian judge, following a request from the public prosecutor in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, a town north of Naples.

The warders targeted include prison police officers and administrative workers alike, with eight arrested and 18 others put under house arrest. Others still were targeted by different measures, including restrictions on their movements and suspensions from jobs.

The pre-trial restrictions were ordered amid a probe into a prison riot which broke out in a Santa Maria Capua Vetere jail on April 6, 2020. The riot erupted amid a wave of prison unrest that swept across Italy during its first coronavirus lockdown. Multiple riots broke out in Italian detention facilities, as inmates were dissatisfied with anti-Covid measures – or the lack of them – introduced by Italy as it became the first European country hard-hit by the virus.

The crackdown in Santa Maria Capua Vetere is believed to have been particularly violent, described by a judge in a preliminary investigation as a “horrible massacre” with the inmates allegedly beaten with batons, strip-searched, forced to kneel and put into solitary confinement en-masse. Some 41 of the warders now under investigation face various charges, including aggravated torture, aggravated personal injury and aggravated mistreatment. The crackdown is said to have affected nearly 300 inmates in the prison.

According to prosecutors, the quelling of the riot had been actively discussed by the officers in group chats, with them allegedly referring to the inmates as “cattle” and threatening to “slaughter them like calves.” After suppressing the riot, the officers allegedly bragged about giving the prisoners “four hours of hell” when no one got “saved.”

The judiciary’s action against the warders has drawn sharp criticism from the major trade unions SPP and USPP, who called it “disproportionate” and “incomprehensible,” and pointed out the crackdown did not come out of nowhere and the prisoners had actually been rioting with a real threat of escape.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Set to Close Centers Housing Illegal Alien Minors: State Won’t Be ‘Commandeered’ into Service’

Tensions are mounting between Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and the Biden administration as Abbott plans to shut down centers holding 4,500 illegal alien children and visit the border with former President Donald Trump.

Abbott has been outspoken about what he calls Biden’s “disastrous” border policies and penned a letter to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra slamming the federal government’s reliance on the state.

“The federal government must solve the federal problem caused by the Biden administration’s disastrous open-border policies,” Abbott wrote. “Texas will not be commandeered into federal government service.”

Politico reported that Abbot will revoke the licenses of shelters for illegal alien children beginning on August 31 — “a move that threatens to upend the refugee resettlement effort and has left federal health officials threatening to sue.”

The outlet further noted that several other states with Republican governors are declining to help the federal government house illegal alien children.

According to the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement, the total number of illegal alien children released to sponsors across the United States between October 2020 and May 2021 numbered 44,265. That compares to 16,837 released between October 2019 and September 2020.

But Texas’s order represents the most drastic attempt by a state to decouple itself from a long-running federal program that relies on state-licensed organizations to shelter migrant children until they can be placed with guardians. HHS has accused Abbott of launching a “direct attack” on the administration’s effort to care for record numbers of unaccompanied children crossing the southern border and said it’s consulting with the Justice Department on necessary legal action.

Under Abbott’s plan, 52 shelters across the state would be forced to halt care for unaccompanied minors or be stripped of the licenses currently needed to remain open. That would leave more than a quarter of the nation’s entire population of migrant kids without anywhere to stay. Texas hasn’t offered any housing alternatives, with Abbott insisting that it’s HHS’ responsibility.

He has also vowed to build a U.S.-Mexico border wall, boasting earlier this month that Texas is “doing more than any other state has ever done to respond to these challenges along the border.”

Abbott has yet to respond to questions HHS Deputy General Counsel Paul Rodriguez sent to him and other Texas officials about the governor’s order, the outlet noted.

“We are exploring our options, for the sake of protecting the safety and well-being of unaccompanied children at licensed facilities in Texas,” an agency spokesperson said in the report.

The Texas governor has criticized the conditions under which the Biden administration is housing unaccompanied alien children, calling one shelter “a health and safety nightmare.”

“The federal government cannot force a state to do the federal government’s job,” Abbott wrote in the letter to Becerra.

“I think as you look across the United States, if you’re a community that has low vaccination rates and you also think that there was low immunity from prior infection, so the virus really hasn’t coursed through the local population, those communities are vulnerable,” Gottlieb said. “So, I think governors need to be thinking about how they build out health care resources in areas of the country where you still have a lot of vulnerability.”

Governor Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, a state where hospital admissions are up 30%, expressed concern about the Delta COVID-19 variant and low vaccination rates in his state.

“The Delta variant is a great concern to us. We see that impacting our increasing cases and hospitalizations,” Hutchinson said on “Face the Nation.” The governor also noted that vaccine hesitancy is high in his state, which he attributed to conspiracy theories, the pause in Johnson & Johnson’s one-shot regimen in April, and individuals simply not believing in the efficacy of the virus. –CBS News
