Communism is a system of government.

It's opposed to democratic/republican systems, any type of nationalism, and individual liberty and human dignity in general.

It can be opposed to capitalism (economic system) but as we see in China, it is not absolutely necessary.

Communism is about complete control, and the utter insignificance of the individual citizen's life and rights. We have seen this with systematic starvation and murder in Communist countries, whereas in the American Constitutional system, even criminals are treated as dignified human beings with rights to fair trials, etc. (not claiming such system always works perfectly, but it is easy to see how this is superior.)

I believe Americans are taught (like I was) that Communism is mostly just an economic system, and that's where people get confused.

We still have a capitalist system, but it has been infiltrated and subverted by Communists since the turn of the 20th century, like all countries have been in some way.

The goal of Communism is world domination and the complete destruction of the ideals, morals, and achievements of human civilization.

It is the enemy of humanity.

The bleeding hearts didn't want to mention the gulags during the Soviet years, and they don't want to mention Chinese slave camps today. They've been subverted beyond belief, away from the empathy they seem to espouse.

Hence why they are considered "useful idiots" by Communist leaders.

Btw, I suggest watching this interview with Soviet defector Yuri Bezmenov if you haven't. He articulates these points, and more, far better than I could.

And, for historical explanation of Communism and 20th century events, I have not found anything more exhaustively laid out than, "Europa: The Last Battle."
