Ahead of Pride March, Israeli Mayor Says LGBTQ 'Conspire to Destroy Social Solidarity'

In a letter opposing the local event, Mitzpeh Ramon head says LGBTQ people are wrong for 'expressing their sexual orientation publicly' and urges residents not to join 'the LGBTQ army'

An Israeli mayor lashed out at the local LGBTQ community on Monday, issuing a harshly worded homophobic statement where he expressed his opposition to a Pride event planned for Friday in his southern town of Mitzpeh Ramon.

In a lengthy open letter, Roni Marom laid out his thoughts on the LGBTQ community, arguing that LGBTQ activists have a "secret agenda" they are advancing by ways of politics, academia and public relations. He also asserted the overt goal of the LGBTQ movement is for there to be widespread acceptance and recognition of same-sex attraction and sexual orientation and the achievement of equal rights for all, but the hidden agenda entails “plans to destroy social solidarity by challenging the three unifying elements of human society – religion, nation and family.”

“I don’t recognize the LGBTQ flag and I’m not prepared to call them a ‘community.’ I object to the shadow army that is marching in victory parades from Manhattan to Berlin,” Marom wrote, urging local residents not to serve as the “anonymous soldiers of the LGBTQ army.”

“It’s a mistake on their part to express their sexual orientation publicly. They should understand that they are the exception to the rule and it is on those terms that society can include them,” he added.

According to Marom, the LGBTQ community cannot be defined as a real community because its constituents don’t occupy a “geographical area.” Marom added that “one of the most frightening facts is that on the issue of LGBTQ today, there is seemingly ‘one truth’ shrouded in the guise of promoting humane and universal values. Such an irrefutable truth that anyone who dares to say anything that does not converge with this idea will be punished."

In response to Marom’s letter, The Aguda-Israel’s LGBTQ Task Force said: “We are ashamed that the head of the local council is legitimizing hate and incitement against the town’s LGBTQ community. At a time when more and more local authority heads all over the country have been working this year to create a safe space for the LGBTQ community, the Mitzpeh Ramon Local Council chief is proudly engaging in LGBTQ-phobia. We will continue to fight for our rights everywhere, even in Mitzpeh Ramon.”

Nigeria announces arrest of separatist leader who fled to Israel, UK

Nigerian AG says Nnamdi Kanu, head of the Indigenous People of Biafra movement, was ‘brought back’ to the country from unknown location

ABUJA, Nigeria — A Nigerian separatist leader, Nnamdi Kanu, whose whereabouts were previously unknown, has been arrested to face trial, the country’s justice minister said Tuesday.

“Nnamdi Kanu has been intercepted… He has been brought back to Nigeria, in order to continue facing trial after disappearing,” Abubakar Malami, who is also attorney general, said in a statement.

Kanu was arrested in late 2015 after calling for a separate state for Biafra, in southeast Nigeria.

His detention sparked mass protests and clashes with security services.

The former London estate agent disappeared in 2017 after being released on bail, only to reemerge in Israel and then in Britain.

Kanu maintains the Igbo people, who are in the majority in southeast Nigeria, are a lost tribe of Israel and it is his mission to lead them to the promised land of Biafra.

The head of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) movement was detained again on Sunday, Malami added, without giving details on the location of his arrest.

He is facing trial for charges that include “terrorism, treasonable felony, managing an unlawful society, publication of defamatory matter, illegal possession of firearms and improper importation of goods, among others,” the statement said.

Southeast Nigeria has seen a recent surge in attacks, with around 130 police and security officials killed and around 20 police stations attacked this year, according to local media tallies.

Election offices have also been attacked.

IPOB, which agitates for a separate Igbo state, has denied being behind the violence, accusing the government of a smear campaign.

Calls for a separate state of Biafra are a sensitive subject in Nigeria, after a unilateral declaration of independence in 1967 sparked a brutal 30-month civil war.

More than one million people died, most of them Igbos, from the effects of conflict and disease.
