Seeing as honesty is such a difficult subject for people these days, how does one even begin to untangle the troubles brought on by a lack of it?

Either you knew beforehand and were just testing the water, so to speak. Or, you honestly asked your question, honestly. Either way, my sociological questions remains. Covidscam is a hundred times bigger, but 9/11 was at its time a new size of ram into the psychological door of America. 20 years ago, and yet hardly any significant number of people are able to talk about it without revealing debilitating quantities of UNTRUTH clogging their facilities.
Will Covid just be one, two or three orders of magnitude worse? It sure seems to be shaping up that way unless the spell can be broken.
