The Coronagraph Instrument (CGI) is one of two instruments on the

Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), a NASA project now

in the design (Phase B) stage and scheduled for launch in 2025.

• CGI is designed to demonstrate space coronagraphy at sensitivity levels

of Jovian-mass planets and faint debris disks in reflected starlight.

• The CGI design is tailored to the predicted WFIRST observatory

characteristics, and design refinements continue as engineering

knowledge of the WFIRST advances.

• The CGI will demonstrate in space, for the first time,

key enabling technologies for future exo-Earth imaging missions:

• precision optical wavefront control with deformable mirrors,

• sensitive EMCCD photon-counting imaging detectors,

• selectable coronagraph observing modes,

• l ow-resolution integral field spectroscopy,

• advanced algorithms for wavefront sensing and control,

• high-fidelity models for the integrated spacecraft and coronagraph,

• and post-processing methods to extract images and spectra.

Deaths surge in U.S. and Canada from worst heatwave on record

 

VANCOUVER/PORTLAND, June 30 (Reuters) - A heatwave that smashed all-time high temperature records in western Canada and the U.S. Northwest has left a rising death toll in its wake as officials brace for more sizzling weather and the threat of wildfires.

 

The worst of the heat had passed by Wednesday, but the state of Oregon reported 63 deaths linked to the heatwave. Multnomah County, which includes Portland, reported 45 of those deaths since Friday, with the county Medical Examiner citing hyperthermia as the preliminary cause.

 

By comparison all of Oregon had only 12 deaths from hyperthermia from 2017 to 2019, the statement said. Across the state, hospitals reported a surge of hundreds of visits in recent days due to heat-related illness, the Oregon Health Authority said.

 

In British Columbia, at least 486 sudden deaths were reported over five days, nearly three times the usual number that would occur in the province over that period, the B.C. Coroners Service said Wednesday

 

"This was a true health crisis that has underscored how deadly an extreme heat wave can be," Multnomah County Health Officer Dr. Jennifer Vines said in the statement. "As our summers continue to get warmer, I suspect we will face this kind of event again."

 

The heat dome, a weather phenomenon trapping heat and blocking other weather systems from moving in, weakened as it moved east, but was still intense enough to set records from Alberta to Manitoba, said David Phillips, senior climatologist at Environment and Climate Change Canada, a government agency.

California is already a world leader in the embryonic electric vehicle industry but needs more government help to flourish, according to a new report from the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation.

 

And while Tesla, based in Northern California, gets most of the EV attention, Southern California is becoming a hub of EV manufacturing in its own right.

 

That includes vehicle manufacturers, battery manufacturers, charging system manufacturers, suppliers to all three, and the sales and service operations that support them.

 

The report says of 275,600 jobs EV-related California jobs in 2018, 119,200 were in Southern California, mainly in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

 

It’s not just automobiles. The Chinese company BYD builds electric buses in Lancaster. American company Proterra does the same in Walnut, just outside LA. Romeo Power assembles battery packs; XOS manufactures heavy electric trucks. Fisker is making electric cars, as is Canoo, a startup that plans to sell its cars by subscription, similar to a short-term lease.

 

Ampere Motors of Santa Monica offers three-wheel electric vehicles, while Hyperion, headquartered in Orange, is commercializing hydrogen fuel cell technology. (Fuel cells are batteries that process hydrogen fuel to generate electricity.)

 

While totaling only 1.5% of the jobs in Southern California’s five counties, electric-vehicle industry employment is growing almost twice as fast as jobs in general, and the pay averages $91,300 statewide and $80,900 in Southern California.

Myanmar coup protesters torch army uniform

 

The protest was one of the biggest in Yangon in recent weeks, although demonstrations against the military take place daily in many parts of the country.
