I have never thought they would try escaping to space.

The islands they wish to build off the coast, their mega yachts and Antarctica will take care of them. Gates has the farm land to grow decent food for them. They have the seed vault when they are finished raising the planet. If it gets really bad, they will run to ground for a few years, until it is safe to reappear.

They aren't leaving here, they will be cleaning/tidying up the place is all.
