Demolition at Florida condo collapse site could come as early as today as Tropical Storm Elsa looms

SURFSIDE, Fla. — The demolition of the rest of the partially collapsed Florida condo building could come as early as Sunday as rescuers suspended their search for the remaining 121 people still unaccounted for and officials braced for an incoming tropical storm.

The decision to move up the demolition of the rest of the Champlain Towers South came Saturday as officials in charge of the search and rescue in the rubble feared the structure could collapse as Tropical Storm Elsa brings strong winds to south Florida.

Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief Raide Jadallah told the families of missing loved ones that the search and rescue operation had to be suspended while demolition crews drilled holes for the explosives. Jadallah said the drilling could cause the structure to fail, and if that were to happen, “It’s just going to collapse without warning.”

The exact timing of the demolition had not yet been set, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said Sunday morning. The demolition would begin as soon as the preparations are complete, regardless of time of day, she said.

Officials have said workers are drilling holes and inserting explosive charges – a slow process to ensure the building doesn’t collapse prematurely.

Tropical Storm Elsa as it tracks closer to FloridaAll eyes were on Tropical Storm Elsa on Sunday as it churned closer to Florida with a likely landfall early this week.

Tropical storm conditions with winds over 39 mph could whip up by late Monday in South Florida, forecasters said, a concern that helped spur a decision to demolish the remains of a condo that collapsed in Surfside, near Miami Beach. Officials fear strong winds from the storm could topple the portion of the condo still standing, endangering rescue crews. Work could begin as early as Sunday.

Even if the storm tracks west, South Florida would not be completely spared. "We have a building here in Surfside that is tottering. It is structurally unsound,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said. “And although the eye of the storm is not likely to pass over this direction, you could feel gusts in this area.”

DeSantis issued a state of emergency Saturday for 15 counties and urged residents to prepare. A tropical storm warning was issued Sunday for the Florida Keys from Craig Key westward to the Dry Tortugas. Under a tropical storm watch: the Florida Keys from Craig Key eastward to Ocean Reef, including Florida Bay, and the southwest coast of Florida from Flamingo northward to Bonita Beach.

Elsa, downgraded 24 hours earlier from being the first hurricane of the 2021 season, was nearing Jamaica on Sunday after killing three people in St. Lucia and the Dominican Republic and leaving a trail of damage and power outages in it wake. Heavy rains and tropical storm-force winds were expected to spread over eastern Cuba, the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm was about 50 miles north of Kingston, Jamaica, on Sunday and had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, the hurricane center said. Elsa was moving toward the west-northwest at 13 mph and was expected to turn toward the northwest Sunday night or Monday. The storm would move across central and western Cuba and head toward the Florida Straits, passing near the Florida Keys late Monday. It was expected to move near or over portions of the west coast of Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday, the hurricane center said.

Rep. McCaul: Biden is 'going to own' Afghanistan falloutThe top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee hammered President Joe Biden on Sunday for his withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

Rep. Mike McCaul (R-Texas) said that the Taliban is poised to threaten the stability of the Afghan government and Biden will be responsible for the looming violence and repression left in the Taliban’s wake.

“We’re going dark in Afghanistan, and there’s going to be consequences long term for this,”McCaul said on “Fox News Sunday. “President Biden [is] going to own these images.”

officially left Bagram Airfield and turned over control of the strategically important post to the Afghan National Security and Defense Forces

Biden announced in April that by the fall the U.S. would withdraw nearly all of its remaining forces from Afghanistan after nearly 20 years there. Recently, the military Biden plans to keep 650 troops in the country, primarily to help secure diplomats located at the U.S. Embassy there, but the burden of fending off the Taliban — which was toppled from power in 2001 but which has never gone away — will fall on Afghanistan’s military leadership.

Biden gave a modest vote of confidence on Friday that the Afghan government will be able to do so, and said that the U.S. would provide some support to that end.

But, he said, “the Afghans are gonna have to do it themselves.”

McCaul said he worried about the safety of those stationed at the embassy given the size of the security force designated to the task and compared it to the doomed stand at the Alamo in 1836.

“I'm from Texas. The Alamo, we had 250 Texans fight 5,000 Mexicans, didn't end so well there,” he said. “I think the odds are worse in Afghanistan"

McCaul said he disagreed with Biden’s strategy, which he partially inherited from former President Donald Trump — who set a May 1 deadline, arguing that “the vacuum is going to be filled by terrorists.”

McCaul also referenced concerns raised by top military officials in U.S. during the decision-making process.

“Nobody thought this was a good idea,” McCaul said.

Tyson Foods Recalls 8.5 Million Pounds of Frozen Chicken

The voluntary recall comes after the Agriculture Department linked three cases oflisteriosis to the cooked chicken products, including one death.Tyson Foods is recalling nearly 8.5 million pounds of frozen chicken that may have been contaminated with listeria, the Agriculture Department said.

The voluntary recall was issued after Agriculture Department investigators were notified last month about two people who had been sickened with listeriosis, the department said in a statement on Saturday.

An investigation found evidence linking those cases to frozen chicken from Tyson Foods, the agency said. Investigators eventually identified three cases linked to the recalled products, including one death, the department said.

Symptoms of listeriosis, an infection caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, includefever, convulsions, muscle aches and gastrointestinal issues, according to the Agriculture Department.

The recalled products were frozen, fully cooked chicken produced between December and April, the department said. The products include chicken strips, chicken pizza and pulled chicken breasts that were sold under brand names including Tyson, Jet’s Pizza and Casey’s General Store.

The packages have the “establishment code”P-7089 printed on them, the department said.

In a statement, Tyson Foods said the recalled products were produced at a plant in Dexter, Mo.The company distributed the chicken to stores, hospitals, schools, restaurants and other locations, the Agriculture Department said.

“We’re committed to providing safe, healthy food that people rely on every day,” Scott Brooks, senior vice president for food safety and quality assurance at Tyson Foods, said in the statement. “We are taking this precautionary step out of an abundance of caution and in keeping with our commitment to safety.”

The Agriculture Department said it would continue its investigation to determine if additional listeriosis cases were linked to the recalled products.

The department urged people to throw away or return the recalled chicken. Pregnant women, adults over 65 and people with weakened immune systems are most susceptible to a serious case of listeriosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms usually develop one to four weeks after eating food contaminated with listeria.
