Loophole allows retired NYPD Chief Terence Monahan to make $430K a year

The NYPD’s former highest-ranking uniformed officer is cashing in with his new gig at City Hall — thanks to a little-known legal loophole that allows him to collect both a pension and a taxpayer-funded salary, The Post has learned.

Retired Chief of Department Terence Monahan started collecting his $188,280 annual pension on March 28 while also earning a $242,592 annual salary as Mayor de Blasio’s new senior advisor, according to documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Law.

Retired public employees who are under the age of 65 and are collecting a pension are required to file paperwork — known as a 211 waiver — making the case for why they are uniquely qualified to collect an additional public salary.

The applications then go to the Department of Citywide Administrative Services or the New York State Civil Service Commission for approval. Without the waiver, the retiree is limited to $35,000 per year, according to state law.

But that approval was able to be sidestepped with Monahan placed on the payroll of the Economic Development Corporation — a city-funded nonprofit organization — following his February appointment to oversee the city’s safety planning for COVID recovery.

Pensioners who are employed by a public benefit corporation, like the city’s economic development arm, don’t need to file a 211 waiver, according to a 1997 decision by the city’s Law Department, DCAS spokesman Nick Benson said. The ruling has never been challenged in court.

On top of the dual income, the 60-year-old former cop is also still owed a hefty payout for unused days off, estimated at nearly $300,000, according to a review of his payroll records obtained by The Post. That lump sum payout is still pending, the city’s payroll office said.

Reached by phone recently, Monahan declined to comment on his pay.

In his new role with the EDC, Monahan is tasked with ensuring the safety of employees and visitors in the city, as well as addressing quality-of-life complaints, such as homelessness, drug use and street peddlers, with the help of an 80-cop unit in Midtown.

The 38-year police force veteran was appointed to the lucrative gig days before he was grilled by CCRB investigators over complaints of aggressive tactics used by cops during the George Floyd protests last summer.

Hackers demand $70 million to restore data from hundreds of companies hit by cyberattack – reports

The cybercriminals believed to be behind a devastating attack that left hundreds of companies worldwide offline have reportedly demanded $70 million to restore the data they’re holding ransom.

The demand was posted on a ‘dark web’ blog on Sunday, Reuters reported. The blog is “typically used” by the REvil cybercrime gang, who cybersecurity researchers believe are responsible for the latest attack, as well as an attack in May on JBS, the world’s largest meat-processing corporation.

Last week’s attack targeted Kaseya, a remote IT management platform. Hundreds of Kaseya’s clients in the US, Canada, the UK and worldwide had their data frozen, with knock-on effects for customers in some cases. Swedish grocery chain Coop was forced to close all 800 of its stores on Saturday, as the attack had taken its cash registers offline.

The White House announced on Sunday that the FBI and Department of Homeland Security “will reach out to identified victims to provide assistance.” President Joe Biden, who has previously accused Russia of being behind similar attacks, told reporters that he is “not sure it’s the Russians,” and is waiting on the US’ intelligence agencies to investigate.

The US has previously blamed Russia for numerous cyberattacks on American infrastructure and commerce. The Biden administration sanctioned Russia in April, partly over its alleged involvement in last year’s SolarWinds hack. Even though Biden didn’t accuse Moscow of direct involvement in a cyberattack targeting the US’ fuel supply in May, he did insist that it bore “some responsibility,” as the hackers had allegedly been operating from a Russian-speaking country.

Blame has also been leveled at Beijing. Microsoft claimed in March that it had caught Chinese “state-sponsored” hackers breaking into its email servers, and cybersecurity researchers have accused the Chinese state of involvement in multiple attacks since, including one on New York’s public transportation network.

Moscow and Beijing have consistently denied US accusations of cybercrime involvement.

In a statement on Friday, the Russian Embassy in Washington expressed hope that the US would “abandon the practice of unfounded accusations and focus on professional work with Russian experts to strengthen international information security.”

140 children kidnapped by gunmen in latest school raid in Nigeria

Armed assailants have abducted 140 children from a boarding school in northwest Nigeria. The mass kidnapping is the latest such incident in the country, with hundreds still missing from raids carried out in the past six months.

The pupils were kidnapped from Bethel Baptist High School in Kaduna in a raid late on Sunday night and into the early hours of Monday morning. A teacher at the school, Emmanuel Paul, told the AFP news agency that “the kidnappers took away 140 students – only 25 students escaped. We still have no idea where the students were taken.”

A search for the missing children is underway. Local police spokesman Muhammad Jalige said that “officers involved in the operation are charged to ensure no stone is left unturned” in their efforts to rescue the youngsters.

Monday’s school abduction is part of a larger problem that has plagued the region for the past decade – and one that has forced payouts from desperate families seeking the safe return of their loved one. From June 2011 to March 2020, it was estimated by SB Morgen Intelligence, a Nigerian research and consulting firm, that at least $18.34 million dollars had been paid to kidnappers for ransom.

Armed gangs also kidnapped at least eight people, including two nurses and a one-year-old baby, from a tuberculosis hospital in the same region early on Sunday morning.

Since December 2020, nearly 1,000 children have been abducted from their schools by gunmen, hundreds of whom are still missing. Last month, 80 students and five teachers were abducted in a similar attack on a school in the northwestern state of Kebbi.

One of the most prolific school raids carried out on Nigerian soil was executed by the terrorist group Boko Haram in 2014, when almost 300 Christian students, mostly girls, were abducted from Chibok.

Biden administration health officials suggest return to masking if traveling to area with low vaccination rate

National public health officials in the U.S. are saying that vaccinated Americans may want to consider wearing masks again when traveling to areas with a low vaccination rate.

Though more than 156 million people in the U.S. are now fully vaccinated, public health officials are raising concerns over the "Delta variant", a coronavirus variant that emerged in India and appears to be more transmissible than other forms of the virus. It remains unclear whether this version of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is deadlier than other versions, though some evidence suggests it is not.

In response to rising COVID-19 cases, believed to be caused by the Delta variant, some local communities are issuing strong recommendations for residents to return to masking, even if they've been fully vaccinated. Last week, the Los Angeles County department of Public Health in California and the St. Louis County and city public health departments in Missouri released health advisories urging a return to wearing masks indoors, NBC News reported.

Reached for comment, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky explained that vaccinated Americans are protected from all known variants of the virus that causes COVID-19, but may want to consider wearing a mask to protect unvaccinated individuals in their communities.

"If you're vaccinated, you have a very high degree of protection from all of the variants that we are aware of circulating in the United States," Walensky told NBC News.

Over 55% of Americans eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine have been fully vaccinated with both doses, which while significant means millions of Americans who can be vaccinated still are not. Walensky said there are an estimated 1,000 counties in the U.S. where fewer than 30% of residents have been vaccinated.

"If you're in a community that has a high amount of disease and less than a third of your population is vaccinated, one should consider whether the policy should be to mask," she said, explaining that masking is "more about protecting the two-thirds of the community that are not vaccinated."

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci, the White House's top advisor on COVID-19, made similar comments to NBC News anchor Chuck Todd on "Meet the Press" Sunday.

Fauci said vaccinated Americans should "go the extra mile" when traveling to parts of the country with a low vaccination rate.

"Vaccines are not, even as good as they are and highly effective, nothing is 100%," Fauci said.

Govt to Force Gun Owners to Pay Annual Tax, Will Confiscate Guns from Those Who Refuse

San Jose, CA — In a move that is being celebrated by the anti-gun crowd, the government of San Jose, California has passed a resolution — unanimously — to force gun owners to pay an annual tax and carry insurance for the privilege of self-defense.

Though the forthcoming tax has yet to be determined, lawmakers have already determined that they will begin confiscating guns from anyone who refuses to pay it.

This move comes on the heels of another Orwellian gun law the city passed two weeks ago which requires every single gun purchase to be video and audio recorded and that media stored indefinitely.

The city claims the gun tax is necessary to force gun owners to cover the costs related to gun violence in the city. Given the fact that most gun crimes are not committed by law-abiding gun owners, this measure is little more than an attack on legal guns.

Naturally, this has gun rights activists up in arms and they are promising to take the city of San Jose to court if they follow through with the measure.

“The whole proposal is completely disingenuous. It fails to provide any proven solutions. It is blatantly unconstitutional,” San Jose resident Dave Truslow, a National Rifle Association firearm instructor, told the San Jose Spotlight. “In the meantime, (Mayor Sam Liccardo) is hoping to bask in the sunlight.”

Another valid point brought up by those who oppose this new law is the fact that — like most taxes, fines, or monetary requirements — it targets poor people. For those who can afford to pay, it won’t be that big of a burden but for those who can’t afford it, they will be forced to turn in their guns or become criminals overnight.

It appears this is a back-door means of disarming the city’s poor population.

“What these measures really do is penalize the less affluent,” Truslow said.

According to the San Jose Spotlight, Truslow is concerned that there are no measures to address issues that drive crime, including increasing the number of San Jose police officers, pursuing unlawful possession of guns, constructing a city jail for those who violate Santa Clara County’s sanctuary policy, more effective gang intervention programs and workplace violence training for public employees. He wants the city to address crime instead of Liccardo’s gun measures.

Sam Paredes, executive director of gun rights policy group Gun Owners of California, told the Mercury News last month that Liccardo would “have his rear end handed to him in a basket by a judge.”

“We think that the mayor must have aspirations to be king or something because his proposals are not allowed under federal or state law because of the constitution on the federal side and the preemption law on the state side,” Paredes told San José Spotlight.

Three Huddersfield Grooming Gang Rapists Convicted of Abusing Schoolgirl

Banaras Hussain, Mohammed Akram, and Talish Mahmood Ahmed have been convicted of raping a vulnerable schoolgirl from the age of 13 in Huddersfield, England.

The girl, daughter of an abusive single mother as well as a bullying victim, was preyed on from 1995 to 1998, with Hussain, a married man, having initiated the abuse.

The victim was plied with alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs including amphetamines by the gang, according to a YorkshireLive court report, and raped in grubby flats, a primary school playground, woods, and even her own bedroom after one of the abusers, Mohammed Akram, climbed up her drainpipe in secret.

“More and more men came onto the scene and the group got bigger and bigger – such that she can’t even remember them all now,” prosecutor Kate Batty said of the gang’s victim, telling the jury how “Routine to her became the day in, day out events of being touched or groped or having sex on grubby mattresses on the floors of flats and houses that she found herself in.”

The final straw came when she had her drink spiked, was driven to a secluded area, raped, and then “dumped, thrown out of the taxi at the end of her street with her knickers and trousers round by her ankles,” at which point she reported her abusers to the police — although it would be years before effective action was taken.

Banaras Hussain, of Church Street in Paddock, was found guilty of two counts of rape, Mohammed Akram, of Moorbottom Road in Thornton Lodge, was convicted of two counts of rape and one count of indecent assault, and Talish Mahmood Ahmed, of Rashcliffe Hill Road in Lockwood, was convicted of one count of rape.

A fourth man, 41-year-old Mohammed Khalil of Larch Road, Paddock, was acquitted of one count of indecent assault.

As has often been the case with historic rape gang offences involving men of South Asian heritage, the victim was “let down” by the police.

“She gave a statement to the police and was medically examined. Despite that, no action was ever taken,” the prosecutor recalled.

“It’s not entirely clear why but what we do know is that things have come a long way since the late 1990s in terms of our understanding of sexual offending,” she added — as if there was ever a time when law enforcement would not have understood that sexual activity under-16s is criminal.

France Investigates Fashion Firms for ‘Crimes Against Humanity’ over Xinjiang Slave Labour

France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office has opened up an investigation into four fashion companies for being complicit in “crimes against humanity” for the alleged use of slave labour in the Xinjiang region of China.

The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) has accused Uniqlo France, owned by the Japanese group Fast Retailing, Inditex, the owner of Zara, the textile firm SMCP, and the shoemaker Skechers of profiting from Uyghur slave labour in Xinjiang.

The investigation was launched following complaints from the anti-corruption association Sherpa, the Ethics on Etiquette collective, the Uyghur Institute of Europe, and a Uyghur who was interned in Xinjiang province, Sud Ouest reported.

The lawyer representing the plaintiffs in the case, William Bourdon said: “This is just the start, this investigation will necessarily create a legal risk and additional accountability for all those who, with complete impunity, thought they could import into France, in order to enrich themselves, resources and products at the cost of tears and blood.”

The companies face charges of “concealment of the crime of genocide and crimes against humanity”. The complaint was based on a 2020 report from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute think tank, which alleged that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has forcibly transferred over 80,000 Uyghurs to factories throughout China to work in slave-like conditions to produce products for foreign brands.

“In factories far away from home, they typically live in segregated dormitories, undergo organised Mandarin and ideological training outside working hours, are subject to constant surveillance, and are forbidden from participating in religious observances. Numerous sources, including government documents, show that transferred workers are assigned minders and have limited freedom of movement,” the report claimed.

Biden Is Contributing To Human Trafficking

Unaccompanied migrant children face a bigger risk of trafficking because of the way that the Biden administration releases kids from government custody, a senior senator told the Washington Examiner.

Sen. Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican, explained that the flawed system that the government relies on to find sponsors for kids who come over the border has been further weakened by President Joe Biden, and the senator maintains that children will grieve.

Earlier this spring, in the midst of the highest-ever levels of migrant children coming alone on the U.S.-Mexico boundary, the Biden administration decided to stop getting as much personal information from adults who volunteered to take care of the children after they were let out of the Department of Health and Human Service’s child care centers.

States who came forward to get children without worrying that they would risk getting caught by law enforcement and deported in the process.

Portman said he is concerned about the Biden administration’s call for all employees of government agencies to help out at HHS facilities working with children in custody, calling it a recipe for trouble and that the bureaucrats themselves could be a danger to children.

“While I am not aware of any wrongdoing yet, I am concerned that those employees could pose a risk to children — either because of potential intentional bad acts or because they are not properly trained or credentialed to work with children — especially those who have faced traumatic circumstances in their home countries or on their trip to the border,” Portman announced in an email. “I would hope that HHS would share … the type of background checks if any, that HHS completes before the federal employees arrive to care for the children.”

DC AG subpoenas Facebook for data on ALL users that have spread “COVID-19 misinformation”

The District of Columbia (DC) Attorney General (AG) Karl Racine, a Democrat, has subpoenaed Facebook for a wide range of records related to “COVID-19 misinformation” on the platform.

The subpoena was filed on June 21 and demands that Facebook identify all groups, pages, and accounts that have violated the platform’s far-reaching COVID-19 misinformation rules.

It also calls for Facebook to release an internal study that looked at vaccine hesitancy among its users. Media reports on this study in March claimed that it showed that non-rule breaking Facebook content may be causing “substantial” harm.

If Facebook were to comply with this subpoena, it would likely impact millions of users. Facebook has removed more than 18 million pieces of content from Facebook and Instagram for violating its COVID-19 misinformation rules and applied warning labels to more than 167 million pieces of COVID-19 content.

The subpoena is part of a previously undisclosed investigation into whether Facebook is violating consumer protection laws.

Racine’s director of communications, Abbie McDonough, told Politicothat the investigation is part of an effort to ensure that Facebook cracks down on “vaccine misinformation.”

The Horrifying Rise Of Total Mass Media Blackouts On Inconvenient News Stories

Two different media watchdog outlets, Media Lens and Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR), have published articles on the complete blackout in mainstream news institutions on the revelation by Icelandic newspaper Stundin that a US superseding indictment in the case against Julian Assange was based on false testimony from diagnosed sociopath and convicted child molester Sigurdur Thordarson.

FAIR’s Alan MacLeod writes that “as of Friday, July 2, there has been literally zero coverage of it in corporate media; not one word in the New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, NBC News, Fox News or NPR.”

“A search online for either ‘Assange’ or ‘Thordarson’ will elicit zero relevant articles from establishment sources, either US or elsewhere in the Anglosphere, even in tech-focused platforms like the Verge, Wired or Gizmodo,” MacLeod adds.

“We have not found a single report by any ‘serious’ UK broadcaster or newspaper,” says the report by Media Lens. “But in a sane world, Stundin’s revelations about a key Assange witness — that Thordarson lied in exchange for immunity from prosecution — would have been headline news everywhere, with extensive media coverage on BBC News at Six and Ten, ITV News, Channel 4 News, front-page stories in the Times, Telegraph, the Guardian and more.”

“For those who still believe the media provides news, please read this,” tweeted Australian journalist John Pilger regarding the Media Lens report. “Having led the persecution of Julian Assange, the ‘free press’ is uniformly silent on sensational news that the case against Assange has collapsed. Shame on my fellow journalists.”

As we discussed the other day, this weird, creepy media blackout has parallels with another total blackout on a different major news story which also involved WikiLeaks. In late 2019 the leak outlet Assange founded was publishing multiple documents from whistleblowers in the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) revealing that the organisation’s leadership actively tampered in the investigation into an alleged chlorine gas attack in Douma, Syria in 2018 to support the US government narrative on the allegation, yet the mass media wouldn’t touch it. A Newsweek reporter resigned from his position during this scandalous blackout and published the emails of his editors forbidding him from covering the story on the grounds that no other major outlet had reported on it.

Make no mistake, this is most certainly a new phenomenon. If you don’t believe me, contrast the blackout on these stories with the mass media coverage on WikiLeaks revelations a few short years earlier. The press eagerly lapped up the 2016 publications of Democratic Party emails and actively collaborated with WikiLeaks in the publication of the Chelsea Manning leaks in 2010. Even the more recent Vault 7 leaks published in 2017 received plenty of media coverage.

Yet now every WikiLeaks-related story that is inconvenient for the US-centralized empire is carefully kept out of mainstream attention, with a jarring uniformity and consistency we’ve never experienced before. If the media environment of today had existed ten or fifteen years earlier, it’s possible that most people wouldn’t even know who Assange is, much less the important information about the powerful that WikiLeaks has brought to light.

Turkey Allows Qatar To Base 36 Warplanes, Hundreds of Troops

The Turkish press on July 1 reported that Ankara has signed an agreement with the Persian Gulf state of Qatar to allow the latter to deploy 36 military aircraft and 250 service members to Turkey.

The Turkish chief of the general staff, General Yaşar Güler, was in the Qatari capital of Doha on March 2 to sign the agreement, though the news of the agreement was only disclosed on July 1 by the Hürriyet newspaper. The agreement in turn is based on a bilateral military cooperation pact signed by the two nations in 2007, three years after the NATO summit in Istanbul, Turkey which established the military bloc’s partnership program for Persian Gulf nations, the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative. Qatar became one of the first four members (with Bahrain, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates).

The nation of less than three million people supplied NATO with six Mirage multirole combat aircraft for its war against Libya in 2011. It also deployed several hundred troops to assist Western-backed anti-government fighters.

The main beneficiary of that criminal assault against the North African country appears at the moment to be Turkey, which is the only nation to have regular military forces in Libya and appears to have marked the nation as its western-most military outpost.

Hürriyet’s account of the arrangement says: “With the technical arrangement prepared in accordance with the principle of developing activities based on friendship and cooperation between the two countries, it is aimed that Qatari military pilots can use Turkish airspace and airports temporarily in order to contribute to their training and experience.” Temporary may mean the rotation of military aircraft on an ongoing basis.

The Turkish air force will accompany and guide the Qatari planes during exercises.

Although the two countries haven’t identified which nation or nations Qatari warplanes may next be sent to attack, it’s worth recalling Turkey’s bordering Iran, Iraq and Syria as well as the three countries of the South Caucasus, and Qatar’s proximity to Yemen, Iran and Afghanistan.

Facebook is Spamming Conservative Users With Messages About a Support Group for ‘Extremists’

Facebook users are expressing shock and dismay after being spammed with messages touting a support group for people concerned about “extremists.”

“Are you concerned that someone you know is becoming an extremist?” the message begins. “We care about preventing extremism on Facebook. Others in your situation have received confidential support,” the message continues.

The Facebook message goes on to suggest that “you can help” by joining their support group. “Hear stories and get help from people who have escaped violent extremist groups,” the message concludes.

The pastor’s church Facebook page posts religious memes, church events, and Sunday hymns. His personal account, where the message appeared, also posts conservative and church-related content. Foster told American Greatness that he has no idea what triggered the message.

The Life After Hate non-profit support group mentioned above was started in 2011 allegedly by “a group of former violent extremists. “Today, far-right extremism and white supremacy are the greatest domestic terror threats facing the United States,” the group asserts.

Another Facebook user who clicked on the “Get Support” link was asked to “say more” about the extremism he was witnessing. The individual “expressed concern” about what he called Facebook’s “Communist and Fascist policies.”

Also on July 1, a private support group appeared on Facebook “for those worried someone they know is becoming an extremist.” The group currently has 34 members, five of whom are admins.

Doug Emhoff carves out path as first second gentleman

Doug Emhoff has spent the first six months of the Biden administration carving out his role as the first second gentleman of the United States, traversing across the country to promote coronavirus vaccines and extend support to small businesses.

Emhoff has headlined regular events but still kept a low profile in the media, striking a balance between breaking barriers as the first male second spouse while also fulfilling the role in a way second ladies have done traditionally. Observers say the lack of media attention is a sign of success.

“He hasn’t made any mistakes that made him an issue, which in some ways is the one thing you want to avoid,” said Julian Zelizer, a political history professor at Princeton University. “Part of the trick is doing it and not overstepping in ways that make you the focus.”

Emhoff, a lawyer, has been a trustworthy asset for the administration, say other observers.

“Even though he is a wealthy entertainment lawyer, he’s playing that down and his persona now as second spouse is, 'I’m more of a regular guy who goes out and supports his wife’s career and teaches at a nearby law school.' This makes him a more relatable spouse than if he was playing up his Hollywood connections at this time,” said Katherine Jellison, professor of U.S. women’s and gender history at Ohio University.

Emhoff has been deployed across the country for the administration’s vaccination tour, including a trip with first lady Jill Biden to Houston this week, where they attended an Astros game with military members and front-line workers.

On Friday, Emhoff traveled solo to Bryce Canyon, Utah, as part of the Biden administration’s effort to highlight the progress against the coronavirus ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.

He visited a barber shop in Chicago last week with Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) and earlier this month visited a high school in Birmingham, Ala., with Veterans Affairs Secretary Dennis McDonough. His other visits in June included Memphis, Tenn., and Tallahassee, Fla.

“I think it’s unleashing the power of that position,” said Katherine Sibley, director of the American studies program at St. Joseph’s University. “What a waste if he did sort of hang back like previous spouses had. I think he’s using his personality; that will be very helpful for his wife and, I think, for the administration.”

President Biden on Friday looked for Emhoff in the crowd when he welcomed the Los Angeles Dodgers to the White House. Emhoff, a California native and lifelong Dodgers fan, visited the team’s clubhouse before a game on Friday.

Israel confirms vaccine less effective against Delta variant, eyes third dose

PM Bennett instructs Health Ministry to promote medical studies into long-term efficacy of Pfizer vaccine to provide decision-makers with ‘vital information’ on booster shots

Israel’s Health Ministry released data on Monday showing that the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID vaccine appears to largely prevent hospitalization and serious cases, but is significantly less effective against preventing the spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus.

According to the ministry, the Pfizer vaccine’s effectiveness in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 has dropped by some 30 percent to 64%, given the spread of the Delta variant. The data shows that during May, when the strain was less prevalent, the vaccine was 94.3% effective.

The Delta variant, which is believed to be twice as contagious as the original strain of COVID-19, is thought to be responsible for 90% of new cases in Israel over the past two weeks.

The data, however, also shows that the vaccine is still highly effective against preventing serious symptoms and hospitalization. During May, that figure stood at 98.2%, and during June, it was 93%.

On Monday evening, the Health Ministry said that 369 people had been diagnosed with coronavirus since midnight, bringing the total number of active cases in the country to 2,766.

There were 70 people hospitalized and 35 in serious condition. A week ago there were just 22 people in serious condition.

Amid the rise in COVID cases across the country, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett along with Health Minister Nitzan Horowtiz instructed the Health Ministry on Monday to promote two medical studies on the need for a third vaccine shot against the coronavirus, which they said will provide decision-makers with “vital information.”

The Prime Minister’s Office said that the studies, which will be overseen by the head of public health services in the Health Ministry, Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis, will “evaluate the efficacy of the vaccine and the rate at which it wears off over time.”

Top Biden Allies Worked for Group With Close Ties to Chinese Communist Party

Experts worry National Committee on U.S.-China Relations could impact Biden administration policy

Top Biden allies including former Treasury secretary Jacob Lew and National Security Council official Kurt Campbell have done work for a nonprofit funded by companies like Facebook and Disney that is known for working closely with Chinese officials and Communist Party front groups.

Campbell, whom President Joe Biden tapped to run Asia policy at the National Security Council, was a director at the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations through May 2020. Lew, who served as Treasury secretary during the Obama-Biden administration, took over in January as chairman of the National Committee, which bills itself as an educational nonprofit that seeks open dialogue between Beijing and Washington. Lew, an early endorser of Biden's presidential campaign, reportedly met with Biden's team in 2020 to discuss economic policy.

One intelligence analyst who studies China's influence efforts in the West said that the National Committee's "soft-on-China" position helps open Chinese markets to the National Committee's corporate donors, a group of more than 50 companies that includes firms like BlackRock, Blackstone, Citigroup, and Mastercard. The National Committee is also likely to have access to the Biden administration, where it could advocate for closer economic ties to China.

"The National Committee is more that of a business league for U.S. companies in China [and] PRC companies in the U.S.," said Anders Corr, an intelligence analyst and editor of the Journal of Political Risk.

He said the group operates more as "a two-way unregistered foreign agent networking venue than strictly as a U.S. nonprofit organization."

Officials from the organization have met with and spoken to Biden administration officials, according to a spokesman for the National Committee. The spokesman told the Washington Free Beacon that the organization's officials have met with all presidential administrations dating back to its formation in 1966.

The National Committee has faced accusations that in its push to develop closer ties to China, it glosses over China's human rights abuses and foreign influence efforts. The National Committee's conciliatory approach to China is evidenced in several recent events and media interviews.

Lew hosted an event in February for a Chinese official, Yang Jiechi, who called on the United States to "stop meddling" in China's affairs by criticizing Beijing over its actions in Tibet, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong. Another National Committee official, former U.S. trade representative Carla Hills, criticized the Trump administration's China trade policy at a Jan. 26 event convened by the China-U.S. Exchange Foundation, a think tank suspected of working as a front group for the Chinese Communist Party. During the event, Carrie Lam, the chief executive of Hong Kong, defended a controversial national security law that was recently used to arrest pro-democracy journalists.

Neither Lew nor Hills pushed back against the rhetoric from their Chinese counterparts.

Thousand Afghan Soldiers Fled To Tajikistan As Taliban’s Advance Continues

Last night, more than a thousand soldiers of the Afghan Armed Forces were forced to retreat to the territory of Tajikistan. They were forced by the Taliban, who are capturing districts in the northern province of Badakhshan one by one.

The total number of 1,037 Afghan service members retreated to the territory of Tajikistan in order to save their personnel.

This is not the first time that the Afghan Armed Forces under the pressure of the Taliban movement, but it is the largest defeat reported the last days. Since June 22, thousands of Afghan soldiers have crossed the border four time.

On July 5, the President of Tajikistan ordered to mobilize 20,000 military personnel to strengthen the border control with Afghanistan.

Amid the defeat of Afghan forces, the Taliban is active throughout Afghanistan, seizing districts across the country.

The northern Badakhshan province seems to be the main battlefield in Afghanistan. It is a of strategic importance because of its 910-kilometer border with the Republic of Tajikistan.

Most of the districts are fallen under Taliban’s control without fighting. The Taliban militants have recently taken full control of the Khokhon, Shikai, Nusai, Mohimai, Shugnon and Sulton Ishkashim districts of the Badakhshan province.

On July 3, the Taliban was on the verge of taking Faizabad, the provincial capital of the Badakhshan province. The Afghan Forces are reportedly preparing a counter offensive in Badakhshan in order to prevent the falling of the capital city. Afghan commandos of special operation forces were deployed to the Faizabad city.

Taliban militants are stepping up their pressure on the Afghan town of Hairaton, bordering Uzbekistan, in Balkh province.

Security forces, including commandos, border guards, special forces have created a five-kilometer zone to protect the border city from all sides. It is of strategic importance as the Friendship Bridge is located there, which connects Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.

The Taliban has recently captured the positions of the Afghan army in the Marawara district of Kunar province on the border with Pakistan. After the battle, half of the defenders surrendered to the militants, and about 30 soldiers moved to the territory of a neighboring state.

According to the initial report by the Spokesman for Operation Inherent Resolve Col. Wayne Marotto, three rockets targeted the territory of the base causing no casualties, only the material damage.

According to the sources close to Iranian-baked militants, not 3 but 8 107-mm rockets landed on the Ain al-Assad base.

Iranian-backed groups were likely behind the attack. Last year, they stepped up their operations against US forces in response to the assassination of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Deputy-Commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units, and Commander of Iran’s Quds Force, Qassim Soleimani.

Open Border Activists Demand White House Respond to Confront The “Insurrection of Rebellious States”, AKA Red State Alliance Sending Help to Secure Border

This was so predictable CTH wrote about it HERE. Several states responded to the call from Texas Governor Greg Abbott asking for allied states to send law enforcement and national guard to secure the southern border after the Biden administration actively, intentionally and purposefully works to keep it open.

With the potential for cooperation from states, what I call “extreme federalism“, to secure the border regardless of the Federal inaction, an assembly of various activist groups are petitioning the White House to confront the states with direct military action.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), a far-left communist advance group, is asking Joe Biden to fight the state effort with all measures possible, including armed confrontation.

WASHINGTON DC – […] “We told the president in no uncertain terms, this is an insurrection by recalcitrant and rebellious states that must be stopped,” says Domingo Garcia, national president of LULAC. He said Mr. Abbott, who hosted former President Donald Trump for a border visit last week, was “fomenting dangerous racial hatred targeting Latinos.”

LULAC’s Texas director, Rodolfo Rosales Jr., compared the states’ actions to the Civil War. “We are being invaded by governors of the defeated Confederacy to arm the border against brown women and children escaping political persecution, hunger, and death,” he said.

The states LULAC cited — Arizona, Nebraska, Idaho, Florida and South Dakota — don’t exactly match with the contours of the Confederacy, and questions over states’ ability to influence federal immigration policy extend well beyond the current Biden administration border crisis. (read more)

My research aims to improve understanding of the epidemiological factors and population processes shaping infectious disease spread in human and animal populations. A key practical focus is the analysis and optimisation of intervention strategies aimed at reducing transmission or disease burden. Much of my work is applied, informing disease control policy-making by public and global health institutions.

With recent advances in data availability (both epidemiological and molecular) and affordable high-performance computing, mathematical models of infectious disease spread now offer the potential to provide predictive, quantitative analyses of alternative disease control and treatment strategies, as well as qualitative insight into the complex non-linear processes shaping pathogen replication and evolution. An important strand of my research program is therefore to develop the statistical and mathematical tools necessary for such increasingly sophisticated models to be rigorously tested and validated against epidemiological, molecular and experimental data. The breadth of my research interests reflects my belief that comparative analyses of different host-pathogen systems can provide powerful insights into the population processes common to many infectious diseases, while highlighting how key differences in disease biology, route of transmission or host population structure determine observed differences in patterns of infection.

Emerging infections

A major research interest throughout my career has been on developing mathematical models of the geographic spread of newly emergent pathogens - such as BSE/vCJD, foot and mouth disease, SARS and MERS, pandemic influenza, Ebola and ZIka - to examine containment and mitigation strategies. Much of this work has been undertaken in collaboration with colleagues in my department and external institutions - most notably public health partners such as the World Health Organization [WHO], the US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention and Public Health England. These partnerships have been vital in facilitating the results of my work being used to inform policy. Building on our earlier work, I and my colleagues founded the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis (previously known as MRC Centre for Outbreak Analysis and Modelling) in 2008 to consolidate and enhance our work on emerging infections and its translation to public health policy-making. In 2019 the Abdul Latif Jameel Institute for Disease and Emergency Analytics (J-IDEA) was launched to further bring together global health researchers in the School of Public Health and drawing on Imperial’s expertise in data analytics, epidemiology and economics.

Luxembourg PM in ‘Serious,’ Stable Condition With COVID-19

BRUSSELS—Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel is in a “serious, but stable” condition and will remain in the hospital for up to four more days after he was unable to shake a bout of COVID-19 that developed over a week ago, the government said.

In a statement, it added that the running of state affairs will be taken over by Finance Minister Pierre Gramegna in the meantime.

Bettel, 48, was diagnosed with insufficient oxygen saturation, forcing him to remain under medical observation since the weekend. He was also suffering from coronavirus symptoms including coughing, headaches, and a fever.

“The medical state of the prime minister is considered serious, but stable,” the government said.

Since he self-isolated last week, Bettel has continued to work remotely and through video conferences as much a possible.

He was taken in for 24 hours of testing and medical analysis on Sunday and those tests continued Monday afternoon.

The European Union Commission indicated that Bettel was doing relatively well. “We understand—and we certainly hope—that it’s not serious, and it’s for checks,” said EU spokeswoman Dana Spinant.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she wished him “a very speedy recovery,” tweeting: “hope to see you soon in good health. In the meantime, rest and take good care of yourself.”

Bettel announced his positive test just after he had attended an European Union summit with 26 other leaders from the bloc for two days. At first he experienced only mild symptoms. But on Sunday, he had to be hospitalized. Bettel had received one COVID-19 vaccine dose in May and had been scheduled to get his second AstraZeneca shot on July 1.

“It was unfortunate that he tested positive just before that,” the official said.

EU summit organizers said they were confident that all virus precaution measures had been strictly adhered to during the two-day meeting. So far, no other leader has said he or she tested positive.

EU leaders have been grappling with the dangers of transmitting the virus during one of their many meetings for over a year now. Most of their summits have been held through videoconference and only when essential issues were dealt with that needed long in-person negotiations did the leaders convene at EU headquarters.

Last summer, a four-day summit on the budget and COVID-19 recovery plans was held at the Europa building, but with maximum social distancing. Many of the toughest negotiating sessions were even held on a sundeck in open air atop the summit building to reduce the risk of transmission even further.

The two-day summit that ended 10 days ago dealt with a series of pressing issues, but much of the focus fell on a tussle between Hungary and most of the other EU nations on LGBT issues. Bettel, who is married to a man, took center stage in defending the rights of LGBT people.

U.S. Marshals rescue 19 children, locate 20, arrest 9 adults in Operation “This Is the Way Home”

A U.S. Marshals Service-led, four-month operation has resulted in the rescue or recovery of 19 children including an additional 20 children that were located and/or self-returned.

Sponsored and funded by the agency’s Missing Child Unit, Operation “This Is the Way Home” ran from March 1 to June 30 and focused on missing and endangered runaways in the New Orleans metro area with a focus in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Tammany parishes.

One of the recoveries, a 16-year-old male runaway who was also wanted by the Clarksville, Tennessee, Police Department on warrants for possession of a firearm, evading arrest, narcotics violations, theft, and violation of juvenile probation, was recovered in Slidell in May 2021 with critical assistance from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office and USMS Middle District of Tennessee. The teen had been a runaway from Tennessee since February of 2020 and is believed to have been involved in gang and narcotics activity in St. Tammany Parish.

The investigation led to the arrest of Kolby Warren, 21, at a residence in the 59000 block of Preacher’s Oak Lane in Slidell on charges of possession with intent to distribute narcotics, illegal possession of stolen firearms, and illegal carrying of weapons.

During this MCU investigation, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office seized $17,586 in U.S. currency, seven firearms (with one being stolen out of New Orleans and another being a rifle), and illegal narcotics to include: Codeine, Oxycodone, other Schedule II narcotics, and Marijuana were seized.

During the children’s recoveries nine adults were arrested on charges including felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile and/or contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. An Amber Alert recovery was also made during the operation. The Amber Alert issued by Arkansas State Police was on a male child under a month old missing out of Paragould, Arkansas. That child was recovered safely in New Orleans. Recoveries during the operation were made in/from the states of Florida, Arkansas, Texas, and Tennessee.

The Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015 enhanced USMS authority to assist federal, state, and local law enforcement with the recovery of missing, endangered or abducted children, regardless of whether a fugitive or sex offender was involved. The USMS established its Missing Child Unit to oversee and manage the implementation of its enhanced authority under the act.

Since 2015, the U.S. Marshals have assisted in the recovery of more than 1,800 missing children. Since 2015, the Marshals have contributed to the recovery of a missing child in 75% of cases received and of those, 66% were recovered within seven days of the U.S. Marshals providing assistance with the case.

BI arrests overstaying French fugitive wanted for sexual abuse of minors

Bureau of Immigration (BI) agents arrested on Thursday a French national wanted in his homeland for sexual abuse of minors.

Operatives from the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit arrested Pascal Didier Gillot, 53, along A. Masangkay St. in San Roque, Antipolo City.

Gillot was the subject of a Mission Order issued by BI Commissioner Jaime Morente for being deemed as a risk to public safety and security.

“We recently received information from French authorities that Gillot is wanted in France, and is the subject of a warrant of arrest for rape cases on children,” said Morente.

Gillot is reportedly also the subject of Interpol red notices for sexual abuse of a child under 15 years old by a person of authority, and for repeated attempts to remove a child from the care of her legal guardian, both in violation of the French Penal Code.

Upon verification of Gillot’s records, it was also found that he is already an overstaying alien.

He will be detained at the BI Warden Facility in Bicutan, Taguig, pending the finalization of his deportation proceedings.

BI arrests overstaying French fugitive wanted for sexual abuse of minors

BI also deported a Bahraini national convicted of rape and sex crimes in his country.

BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said 44-year-old Waleed Abdulla Hamad Alsendi, boarded a Gulf Air flight to his country shortly after noon on Friday, and was accompanied on his flight by three Bahraini police escorts who came here to fetch him.

Morente said the alien was expelled pursuant to a summary deportation order that the BI Board of Commissioners issued against him.

The Board also ordered that Alsendi be placed in the BI Blacklist to prevent him from re-entering the Philippines.

“He is now banned from re-entering the country for being an undesirable alien. His presence here poses a serious threat to Filipino women as he is a sex offender,” the BI chief said.

Records showed that operatives from the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) arrested Alsendi at his residence in Dasmariñas, Cavite last February 23 on the strength of a mission order that Morente issued in response to the request of Bahraini authorities.

He is also a subject of an Interpol red notice that was issued two years ago.

Maldivian among 04 arrested over Mt. Lavinia Child Sex Trafficking Ring

A Maldivian national and three more Sri Lankans were arrested by Sri Lanka Police on Sunday (04) in connection to the Mount Lavinia Child Sex Trafficking Ring.

Police Spokesperson Senior DIG Ajith Rohana speaking to News 1st said the three Sri Lankans are a manager of a hotel who provided a room for the 15-year-old victim to be exploited and two men working for a website on which an advertisement was published to exploit the victim.

On Saturday (03), two suspects were arrested for publishing an advertisement on a website identified as www.lanka.ads.com, and the latest suspects were arrested for publishing an advertisement on www.lanka.adz.com.

In total, 32 suspects were arrested in connection to the Mount Lavinia Child Sex Trafficking Ring and 12 more suspects have been identified for committing statutory rape.

Among those arrested are, the mother of the victim, a three-wheeler driver, a car driver, the individual who designed the advertisement, a gem businessman, a captain of a ship and several crew members, and the Deputy-Chairman of the Mihintale Pradeshiya Sabha, said the Senior DIG Ajith Rohana.

A 15-year-old girl was sexually exploited by an individual in Mount Lavinia via social media outlets and the main suspect in connection with the incident was arrested on the 07th of June, by a special team led by Headquarter-Inspector of Mount Lavinia.

The 15-year-old female victim had been exploited for three months and she had been handed over to various people to be exploited.

Hunter Biden Proposed Union for Prostitutes, According to Texts on Leaked Hard Drive

Hunter Biden, who spent thousands of dollars on prostitutes across the nation, proposed a plan for them to unionize in a 2019 conversation that was on his leaked hard drive.

The president’s son also asserted that he has been “telling strippers for 25 years that they should unionize.”

In a March 2, 2019, conversation with an employee from Los Angeles’s Chateau Marmont, obtained by the Washington Examiner, Biden said prostitutes need to organize more.

“You organize without even organizing in any traditional way,” Biden said. “If you want to advertise legally you go through the unions [of which] you’re a member. Your dues are the fees that you pay for advertising. Whomever does this first will be running the largest union in the country.”

The Chateau Marmont employee responded by saying “haha, that’s actually pretty genius.”

The president’s disgraced son added that those who need these unions the most are the “typical traditionally uneducated minority.”

The report continues on to say that “this new union would require proof that someone isn’t a sex trafficker and that all contacts are consensual. Pimps who join would be rated ‘like you rate nonprofits,’ Biden said.”

“In various other transactions with pimps and prostitutes, Biden’s alleged texts show a highly organized procedure in which he visits a website, agrees to certain parameters, and pays electronically. Biden’s unionizing idea appears to be geared more toward better working conditions for prostitutes because this was his theme in the tape recording about strippers.”

Discussing strippers, Biden said “it’s like any other job. There are parts of it that really suck. They’re tiring. There are clients that are complete pains in the ass. There’s management that can be really horrible. There’s really bad situations, of course. It’s like any other job. But they dance because they love it.”

Israel Health Ministry Blocks Dissenting Citizens on Twitter; Legal Experts: ‘Definitely Illegal’

The Israeli Health Ministry yesterday blocked scores of Twitter accounts belonging to Israeli citizens critical of Ministry vaccine policy, especially regarding vaccines for 12-15-year-olds.

The purge was apparently done in coordination with a recent public thread that included tagging a “list” that was recommended to be blocked “as an act of herd immunity” against those critical of the new policy.

Children’s medical rights advocate Dr. Avshalom Carmel wrote:

“The Ministry of Health is blocking citizens who criticize it? That’s called McCarthyism, isn’t it? Is it Coronafascism, or just the misuse of high-tech knowledge by an unknown programmer?”

Legal experts in Israel called the Health Ministry move “definitely illegal,” explaining that the State Comptroller in 2016 ruled that social media blocking by elected officials infringes on freedom of expression and is prohibited. There have also been administrative petitions in the past, resulting in decisions affirming that a government ministry is prohibited from depriving a person of access to information and participation in discourse.

A morning show in Israel said they would “look into the matter”.

The Israeli Health Ministry did not immediately respond to an America’s Frontline Doctors request for clarification.

Refusing to be vaccinated against Covid-19 is a ’sin’ & anti-vaxxers must spend their life repenting, says Russian Orthodox Church

Those who refuse to be vaccinated against Covid-19 are committing a sin they will have to repent for the rest of their lives. That’s according to the Russian Orthodox Church, whose spokesman said rejecting a jab is selfish.

Speaking to TV channel Russia 24, the head of the Russia Orthodox Church’s Department for External Church Relations, Metropolitan Hilarion, explained that his parishioners regularly repent to him for not being vaccinated. They feel guilty because they passed the virus on to someone else who eventually died, he claimed.

“They come and say, ‘How am I supposed to live with this now?’ And it’s hard for even me to say how to live with it,” he explained. “All your life, you have to make up for the sin you committed.”

“The sin is thinking about yourself instead of thinking about other people,” the metropolitan said. “We are responsible – each of us – not only for ourselves and not only for our loved ones, but also for all those who come into contact with us.”

In recent months, the Church has been more vocal about its support for the government’s vaccination program. Metropolitan Hilarion has regularly spoken on TV about the need to follow the rules and take precautions to avoid infection. In June, the cleric revealed his “positive attitude” towards the government initiative to impose compulsory vaccination on those working in the service sector.

“Of course, it is desirable to observe the principle of voluntariness in relation to vaccinations – the principle that was stated from the very beginning,” he explained. “But there is also the principle of people’s responsibility for the lives of other people.”

Russia is currently in the midst of a new wave of Covid-19. On Monday, the authorities announced that there had been 24,353 new cases – a considerable rise from the 9,145 recorded on June 5, just one month ago. The increase in infections is being put down to the emergence of the Delta variant within the country, leading to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin imposing restrictions on cafes, bars, and restaurants in the capital.
