Attorney Terrell Roberts confirmed during the show that the officer who shot Babbitt is the same Capitol Hill Police Lt. Mike Byrd who left his loaded gun in a men’s bathroom on Capitol Hill.

On Tuesday The Gateway Pundit confirmed that Lt. Mike Byrd was named in 2019 as the officer who left his gun in the men’s room.

Pentagon Cancels $10 Billion JEDI Cloud Deal Awarded To Microsoft

The Department of Defense on Tuesday announced the cancellation of a $10 billion 'JEDI' cloud services contract awarded to Microsoft in 2019, instead of Amazon - which thought it was a shoe-in before the Trump administration told Bezos and crew to pound sand.

According to the Pentagon, "due to evolving requirements, increased cloud conversancy, and industry advances, the JEDI Cloud contract no longer meets its needs."

That said, the DoD wants Amazon and Microsoft to 'split' a new version of JEDI - as the need for enterprise-scale cloud capabilities still exists, according to CNBC.

The Pentagon said in the press release that it still needs enterprise-scale cloud capability and announced a new multi-vendor contract known as the Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability. The agency said it plans to solicit proposals from both Amazon and Microsoft for the contract, adding that they are the only cloud service providers that can meet its needs.

The lucrative JEDI contract was intended to modernize the Pentagon’s IT operations for services rendered over as many as 10 years. Microsoft was awarded the cloud computing contract in 2019, beating out market leader Amazon Web Services.

A month later, Amazon’s cloud computing unit filed a lawsuit in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims protesting the JEDI decision.

The company argued that President Donald Trump’s bias against Amazon and its CEO, Jeff Bezos, influenced the Pentagon to give the contract to Microsoft. -CNBC

In 2020, the Pentagon's IG issued a report which concluded that the JEDI award did not appear to be influenced by the White House, though it noted that their office had received 'limited cooperation' from White House officials during its review - and could not complete its assessment of allegations that ethical misconduct had occurred.

According to the Associated Press, the Pentagon had been hinting at scrapping the contract - saying in May that it was reassessing its options after a federal judge dismissed the DOJ's attempts to have key parts of Amazon's lawsuit dismissed.

Estonian consul in St. Petersburg detained after being ‘caught red-handed’ by Russia’s FSB ‘receiving classified secret documents’

Russia’s FSB security agency announced on Tuesday that it had detained Estonia’s top diplomat in the country’s second city, St. Petersburg. Consul Mart Laette is accused of receiving “classified materials” from a Russian citizen

In a statement issued through the agency's press service, officials said that Laette has been taken into custody after being "caught red-handed while receiving materials of a classified nature from a Russian citizen."

The FSB stated that such activities "are incompatible with the status of a diplomatic representative and are clearly hostile in nature towards the Russian Federation." According to the FSB, "measures will be applied to the foreign envoy in accordance with the norms of international law."

In April, Russia announced that the Ukrainian consul in St. Petersburg had been detained by security forces. Alexander Sosonyuk was expelled from the country after being caught holding “a meeting with a Russian citizen, during which he received secret information from law enforcement and FSB databases.” Kiev insisted it had no knowledge of the incident and accused Russia of "hostile" behavior.

Estonia, a former Soviet Republic, joined both the European Union and the US-led NATO military bloc in 2004. In recent years, its relations with Moscow have grown increasingly tense. In December, defense officials in the capital, Tallinn, said that work had been completed on an eight kilometer border fence to separate the Baltic nation's territory from its larger neighbor.

"We all understand that a well-equipped border furnished with the needed technical means and secured is very important for Estonia and the EU to live safely," the country's interior minister, Alar Laneman, said at the time.

Despite poor political ties, a significant minority of those living in Estonia are Russian citizens or of ethnic Russian descent, with Russian-speakers estimated to number around 300,000 in the tiny country, which has a total population of only around 1.3 million.

Lambda Variant's "Unusual" Mutations May Make It Resistant To Vaccines, Researchers Fear(monger)

Scientists are concerned that a newly labeled COVID-19 variant, first detected in Peru, may be resistant to COVID-19 vaccines due to “unusual” mutations.

The Lambda variant, also known as C.37, is believed to have first emerged in Peru in August last year, but has only been recognized as a potential global threat in recent weeks, with the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring it a variant of interest on June 17 after it appeared in several countries simultaneously.

The WHO said the variant’s “neutralizing antibodies” could increase its transmissibility or potentially increase its resistance. It was “associated with substantive rates of community transmission in multiple countries,” it said.

In Peru, the Lambda strain now accounts for 82 percent of new infections. Meanwhile Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico, have all confirmed widespread cases of the variant.

WHO virologist Jairo Mendez-Rico told DW that although the strain may exhibit higher infection rates, there is no indication that it is more aggressive.

Mendez-Rico told the outlet that more data is needed to compare the newly labeled strain to other existing strains such as gamma (P.1) and delta (B.1.617.2), which have already been categorized by the WHO as variants of concern.

Jeff Barrett, director of the COVID-19 Genomics Initiative at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in the UK, told the Financial Times that it is challenging to “make sense of the threat from Lambda, using computational and lab data” because it has “rather an unusual set of mutations, compared with other variants.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, no cases of the Lambda strain have been recorded in the United States so far.

Researchers from the University of Chile in Santiago said in a study published in a preprint last week that the variant has “a considerable potential to become a variant of concern.”

“Our data show for the first time that mutations present in the spike protein of the Lambda variant confer escape to neutralizing antibodies and increased infectivity,” wrote researchers in the paper that has yet to be peer-reviewed.

“Considering that this variant has rapidly spread in Peru, Ecuador, Chile, and Argentina, we believe that Lambda has a considerable potential to become a variant of concern,” they wrote.

The WHO said that further studies are needed to “validate the continued effectiveness of vaccines” with the Lambda strain.

Large Explosion Rocks Iranian Oil Field Near Iraq Border, Leaving Multiple Dead

Iranian state media is reporting that a severe explosion has rocked an oil field in the western Ilam province which borders Iraq on Tuesday afternoon identified as the Cheshmeh Khosh field.

English language Mehr News cites "reports coming in saying that two people have been killed while another is injured" and featured a photo showing a massive fireball rising above the facility. Bloomberg subsequently cited local reports which updated to "Three oil workers killed and four injured in explosion on pipeline that transfers oil from the Cheshmeh Khosh field."

It's a relatively small field, with official sources estimating an average of 18,000 barrels per day of crude oil production capacity.

Iran's oil producing regions have been known to experience occasional serious accidents and fires, but with the final rounds of nuclear negotiations happening in Vienna, and with Israel being behind past 'sabotage' incidents, naturally there remains the possibility of attack.

The new Tuesday incident comes after yesterday a large mysterious fire was reported outside Tehran.

"A large fire was reported at a warehouse or factory next to a highway near Tehran on Monday afternoon, with the purpose of the warehouse and the background of the incident as of yet unclear," The Jerusalem Post reported.

"The IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News Agency reported that the fire was near Karaj, the city where an alleged attack targeted a nuclear facility reportedly used to produce centrifuges."

Australia rejects China’s claims it sabotaged Sinopharm vaccine rollout to Pacific region & insists it has acted in ‘good faith’

After China accused Australia of using “political manipulation” and “bullying” to subvert its Covid vaccine rollout to Pacific nations, Canberra has denied the claims and cited a “moral and economic responsibility” to the region.

Since May, the Chinese-made Sinopharm vaccine has been distributed to a number of Pacific island countries, including the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea (PNG). Two weeks ago, some 200,000 doses of the vaccine were delivered to PNG, where infections have spiked.

Meanwhile, Australia has been off-loading several thousand shots of domestically-manufactured AstraZeneca vaccine in the region. Confidence in the vaccine has been hit in Australia by confusing official vaccination advice and growing concerns in recent months about the risk of rare, but potentially deadly, blood clots.

Approving the use of Sinopharm, PNG health minister Jelta Wong had said in May that those “not comfortable with taking the AstraZeneca” vaccine had the choice of opting for “another vaccine that they are comfortable” taking.

However, over the past week, reports in Chinese news publications have accused Australia of working to “undermine China’s vaccine cooperation with Pacific Island countries.”

According to the Global Times newspaper, Australia had “planted several ‘consultants’ in the national epidemic prevention center in Papua New Guinea”. The paper also accused Australia of “working in the shadows” to block emergency-use authorization for Chinese vaccines in PNG and “threatening senior officials from welcoming Chinese vaccines.”

At a press conference on Monday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin doubled down on those accusations, branding those in Australia who “take advantage of vaccine issues to engage in political manipulation and bullying coercion” as being “callous to the life and health of the people in PNG.”

“What they have done is a breach of the basic humanitarian spirit and gravely undermines global anti-pandemic cooperation. China voices its deep concern over and firm opposition to such irresponsible behavior,” Wang said.

Noting that China saw vaccines as a “global public good” and had no “geopolitical agenda” or “political strings” attached to its rollout, Wang urged Australia to “stop disrupting and undermining vaccine cooperation between China and Pacific island countries” and “work together to… advance international anti-pandemic cooperation with concrete actions.”

‘Fully-fledged’ British force training Saudi troops in Yemen, report says, hinting at extent of UK involvement in civil war

A shadowy unit of British troops has reportedly been providing on-site training and support to Saudi forces in Yemen, bringing fresh scrutiny to the official UK stance of not being “party” to the ongoing conflict in the country.

For months, some 30 soldiers have been stationed at the coalition-occupied Al-Ghaydah airport in the restive eastern province of Mahra, according to news outlet Declassified UK. A number of human-rights groups have alleged torture of detainees at a prison located in the airport.

“The tasks assigned to them so far are military training and logistical support, either for Saudi forces or Saudi-backed militia that are elements from the Southern Transitional Council (a Yemeni secessionist group),” said Hameed Zaabnoot, a tribal leader who has organised ongoing mass sit-in protests against Saudi presence in Mahra.

Relaying that British forces were located in specially designated areas of the airport, Zaabnoot told the publication that they numbered “between 20 and 30 instructors, 10 of (whom) are permanent.” He added that the soldiers arrive aboard Saudi military aircraft and are not bound by visa checks.

“Saudi forces carry out strict security measures against civilian or military personnel inside the airport,” he said, claiming that mobile phones were prohibited, which made it difficult to photograph the British troops.

According to Naser Hakem Abdullah Awidh, a local journalist embedded with Saudi forces at the airport who has seen the soldiers on site, this is no “minor” unit but a “fully-fledged force.”

The outlet said the soldiers have been there for months and reportedly even conduct tourist trips in mufti.

Claiming that it seeks a “sustainable political solution,” Whitehall has repeatedly denied any active involvement – former UK minister of state for the Middle East Alistair Burt told Parliament in 2019 that it was “not a party to” the war – in the coalition, which seeks to reinstate the Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi government that was toppled by the Houthi rebellion in 2015.

Despite such disavowals, the British military and its defence industries are widely understood to be key actors in sustaining the war effort. They are particularly involved in the training, advising and supplying of Saudi air force operations that bomb Houthi strongholds.

The former Verve frontman announced on Monday that he was pulling out of the Tramlines festival in Sheffield later this month, telling fans on Instagram that he “wouldn’t be playing concerts with restrictions.” Ashcroft said that he made the decision once he learned that Tramlines would be “part of a government testing programme.”
