A man who moved from a hotel back into congregate shelter called me today, “The food is spoiled. The milk is off and they keep serving it,” he said. “The guards come into our room every hour to search out lockers. I wasn’t allowed to have a toenail clipper. It’s like a prison.”

For this NYC pays $3500 or $4000 a month per person. The mayor will say that this amount includes “services,” but there are no services. Overworked caseworkers are supposed to help residents find housing but they rarely do. Many ppl said they’d been in the shelter 5+ years.

These people have housing vouchers and just can’t find an apartment, because the voucher amount is $1265 for a studio or one bedroom. The city voted to increase the voucher value to $1900 but they won’t implement it until December. If they implement it now they can save lives.

I have been going to hotels talking to people, trying to help them apply for single or double rooms on account of health concerns to avoid congregate shelters, and basically every single person has a housing voucher. Everyone is ready for an apartment, they just can’t find one.

Here are the executive salaries for

@NYGovCuomo
and run by his sister. I understand non-profit executives make high salaries, but there just seems to be something very wrong about individuals profiting this much off of
